Hi, I’m Layla 🌺

I’m a soul that’s passionate about Somatics (which means “the living body”), Deep Rest and the Nervous System. While these are of greater focus of late, I’m actually wildly fascinated by different modalities that guide us back to ourselves. Like…i’m referring to that living pulsating human self that actually feels things, and feels alive, not the bot 🤖😩 (say no to bot, don’t be a bot teehee)

If you wonder why it’s 70% of the things I can’t stop yapping about, here’s a fraction of that why…

JOURNEY INTO THE BODY: PART 1, THE DESCEND
On Trauma, Psychosomatic and Physical Symptoms

It’s here!! The month of December marks 6 years into my journey of reclaiming my body from C-PTSD and chronic nervous system dysregulation 🦋 It been a long ride, and I finally feel ready to share these footages which i’ve filmed along the way.

As there are so many layers to speak to with regard to this, as such, I have decided to break the sharing into 3 parts. This is Part 1 - which speaks to the total collapse of my mind & body that happened in a manner unforeseen to me. Looking back, I’ve always been disconnected from my body since a child, and circumstances pre-collapse also made it hard to allow for that.

May this series offer insight, awareness and another perspective on ✨ the wisdom of health symptoms ✨for consideration.

When I recall my journey with dance, it started when I was 18. Back then, I was part of a dance crew where we explored different dance genres - hip hop, house, groove, street jazz, locking, popping, contemporary, etc. We met up at least twice a week. Being able to move and be in community alongside like-minded bodies was amazinggg ✨

This continued for 8 years until I experienced an immense health situation that left me frozen and too weak to move. For 2 years, I wondered if I would ever have the strength to dance again. With so many emotions moving through me, losing dance meant that it was one BIG pathway that my body / mind couldn’t discharge or express itself. Instead, expression came through unbearable symptoms.

One day, I was sitting at my balcony. Clearly depressed, yet faintly holding onto the slightest bit of hope. I started moving my body gently in an un-choreographed manner, letting what I was feeling express itself through my body. As I moved, I experienced a surge of current coursing through me. I was in control of my body, yet this current moved me, sounded through me, and at times contorted my expressions. Dear friends, I genuinely thought I was possessed 🤡. Yet I continued because after each “dance,” I felt lighter and more anchored within myself.

As I journeyed further along my recovery path, delved into nervous system science, somatic, and trained with like-minded bodies, my understanding of what was happening began to grow. Now termed somatic movement/dance, this is such a wonderful gateway for restoration, reconnection with ourselves, and remembering the bigger collective field that’s here for us and within us. It’s also a wonderful gateway for aliveness, joy, and not taking ourselves too seriously. As much as life can be hella freaking tough sometimes, ease and vibrancy are a reality when we allow ourselves to be open to them.

I’m looking to create and co-create more dance containers with people for whom movement is a pathway, or who are simply curious about it. You don’t have to be a “dancer”, just a willingness to move deeply and share your honest expression. Looking forward to dance together soon 💃🏻🕺❤ by @layla.somatics

The Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, is a framework that shares about the different states of the Nervous System. It’s also a framework that supports you in understanding your stress responses, and how you can grow your capacity for safety and stability within your nervous system.

When we’re navigating with chronic stress, frameworks are supportive in providing a mental map by which we can anchor our experiences on, and then take necessary steps to soothe ourselves and/or reach out for support.

We have to acknowledge that we live in an epidemic of “stress”, and overworked nervous systems. Many of us also didn’t grow up with language around what stress is, while constantly bombarded with information on the repercussions of stress (physical illnesses, mental health concerns), stress can come off as undesirable and bad.

But what if there was another way to reconsider stress? What it stress has all along been your nervous system’s way of communicating what it needs, for it to be met, rather than suppressed. And by learning to make space to listen, and honor its needs, you grow your capacity to navigate the ups and downs of life with more ease and stability.

In 2 weeks time, we’ll discuss and speak more to this at ✨ Inner Sanctuary, the 3 Day FREE immersion ✨ You can register at the link in bio.

JOURNEY INTO THE BODY: PART 3, THE PRESENT
On Trauma, Psychosomatic and Physical Symptoms

This is Part 3 - and the final part of this series 🦋✨

Creating this series took longer than I expected. The truth is while I began documenting myself from earlier on in the journey, with the intention of sharing it one day, it took quite a bit for me to voice my story. Holding 6 years of lived experience, honoring my growing sense of self, alongside the wider conversation around trauma was not something to rush.

In our lifetime, I believe each of us are initiated in different ways, initiations that guide us back to our inherent self. The self that is both individual and interconnected. Two, but not two.

Trauma can be one of the most profound initiations. When disconnection from the body happens beyond your volition, the journey of finding your way back to the body invites a lot of you. Sometimes it invites you to grit your teeth and crawl through the tunnel, even when no end is in sight. Other times, it invites you to learn how to soften and receive. It invites you to walk on a winding path, to follow quiet inner whispers, to kneel in prayer when you’re out of will. It invites you to feel into the deepest aches of your heart, to loosen the armor, and discover that the love within you and around you can hold.

If you’ve stayed through all 14 mins of this series, I imagine you might be here in one of two ways. Perhaps you’re navigating your own healing journey, or living alongside trauma and seeking strength. This series was created with you in mind. May you keep the faith, and know how courageous you are. May you trust that you are supported in ways beyond what your mind can conceive, and keep walking one step at a time ❤️ Or perhaps you’re here out of curiosity, wanting to understand trauma more deeply. Thank you for witnessing this journey. The world becomes a better place when we remain open, curious, and willing to inquire beyond one’s lens!

Love, Layla

JOURNEY INTO THE BODY: PART 2, FINDING GROUNDING
On Trauma, Psychosomatic and Physical Symptoms

This is Part 2 - Through these footages, I hope to offer several reconsiderations on how we view “trauma” individually, and as a collective.

First and foremost, how the bizarreness of the mind-body’s expressions and inability to “overcome it” is not one’s personal failure, but an actual physiological response that happens (and loops) on a nervous system level.

Second, the importance of seeking support from spaces & practitioners that are well-informed, including modalities that respect the body’s intelligence and innately restorative nature.

Third, if we could view “trauma” (or any initiation of life, honestly), as an invitation to bloom forth aspects of ourselves that we have forgotten along the way.

And finally, if you’re on the journey and keeping holding to whatever glimmer of hope that is, may you know that you’re so so courageous and deeply loved in ways that you’ll grow to soon savour in 🤍🌹
