Join us as we celebrate lunar observation, science & exploration!
•
This weekend we invite you to attend this free, public event to view the moon and planets through telescopes. Prior to viewing, there will be short presentation about our nearest celestial neighbor in the parking lot near the park headquarters. The Hill Country Astronomers will help answer questions and offer views of the Moon through their telescopes.
•
This evening is part of "International Observe the Moon Night," a worldwide public event that encourages observation, appreciation and understanding of our Moon and its connection to NASA planetary science, exploration and human culture. The Moon phase on October 17th will be a waxing crescent about 37% illuminated. you will be able to see many of the prominent features on the moon, including the striking shadows along the terminator (the line between night and day on the Moon) that highlight the craters.
•
The event is weather-dependent, but the forecast currently looks clear and cool 😎

For the second year in a row, LBJ State Park welcomed the Girl Scouts of Central Texas to celebrate Girl Scouts Love State Parks Day! This year, we hosted over 30 girls and their families as part of our Seed Stomp event.

Rangers Amber, Emily, and Jessica taught the scouts about different pollinators and the importance of native wildflowers, helping them all to earn the Girl Scout Pollinator Patch! Then the girls headed over to Ranger Caleb, where they all got to throw and stomp wildflower seeds around the park with some extra help from Ranger Sara the flower.

Thank you so much to all the scouting families who came out to make this day such a success! We look forward to hosting Girl Scouts Love State Parks Day again!

For those that missed it, we recently had our Inland Fisheries Division stock our river with more channel catfish! This native catfish is the most fished species in the United States, with over 8 million caught per year. We cannot promise that there are 8 million of these channel cats in the Pedernales River right now, but there are certainly more than there were before last week. Come on out with your fishing pole and catch yourself some! 🎣

New month = New programs, and this October we have some exciting programs set up for y'all!

Oct 7th: Basics of Gardening, where we will be plowing and planting for the fall/winter garden. This will be hands on, and great for adults and kiddos alike to learn what veggies to plant and how to grow them here in central Texas.

Oct 10th: Our annual From Field to Fabric event featuring cotton. Come and pick some cotton and learn how we spin it into yarn and then dye it using natural colors.

Oct 16th: Back from last year, we have our Not-so-Haunted-House tour, where you will tour the Sauer-Beckmann Farm at night. *Reservations are required. Max of 20 people. Recommended for ages 12 and up*

Oct 17th: Observe the Moon Night with our park rangers and some volunteers from the Hill Country Astronomers. We will have multiple telescopes set up and ready for everyone to enjoy.

Then, we will be offering a Handsewing Basics program every Monday and Friday throughout October! Bring your own clothes to sew, or help us with some of ours. Come and go as you please, 10am-Noon.

For more details on all of these events, check out our Events tab on the LBJ State Park website, which you can find here: https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lyndon-b-johnson/park_events An orange flyer advertising for park ranger programs in the month of October. by @lbjstatepark

You've heard it said that "teamwork makes the dream work," and here we are to say that YES 👏IT 👏DOES 👏

Thanks to the hard work of our park rangers and volunteers, our gift shop has gotten a much-needed face lift. Check out these before and after photos that feature the work that our team put into installing new slat-walls for our merchandise!
