Overlap Stone in Koh Samui is a natural wonder and one of the island’s best viewpoints, overlooking Lamai Beach.

It’s a 20–30 ft rounded boulder resting on a natural rock platform. From a distance, it looks as though it’s precariously balanced above the jungle.

That day trip that involved a scary, bumpy boat ride, extreme heat, a hike up to a hilltop viewpoint, meeting a bucket-list lizard , and ending the day slow and calm at the famous Pink Beach.

The kind of situation I’m in when I text my family, “I’m safe, don’t worry.” 🥲😂

NOTE: Komodo dragons are extremely dangerous. He’s not sleeping; he’s waiting.
And yes, I was at a “safe-ish” distance.

These prehistoric-looking creatures are apex predators that even prey on their own younger Komodo dragons. When baby Komodos hatch, they immediately climb trees to escape bigger Komodos and stay there until they grow big enough to fend for themselves.

Their venom can interfere with blood clotting and lower blood pressure, contributing to shock and blood loss in its prey.

Oh, and female Komodo dragons can reproduce without mating through a process called parthenogenesis. taken in Komodo National Park by @le_kariuki

Kawah Ijen | Indonesia

That mountain that requires a physical health certificate from a licensed doctor to verify fitness and screen for health risks related to sulfur gas.

Kawah Ijen is an active volcano in East Java, famous for its electric-blue flames at night and the world’s largest highly acidic crater lake, with an acidity level close to 0 pH.

The famous Blue Fire that comes from sulfuric gases escaping through volcanic cracks at extremely high temperatures. When ignited, they create the striking neon-blue flames that are visible only in darkness.

The sulfur fumes around the vents are toxic and can be extremely intense, so wearing a proper gas mask is essential. I went on a calm, non-windy day and, admittedly, didn’t carry a gas mask. I only had a bandana covering my nose.

I travelled from Bali to Banyuwangi by ferry to get to Ijen. The climb itself is relatively short, and even shorter if you have comfortable sturdy shoes for hiking.

Indonesia is famous for its world class marine biodiversity, incredible water sports and beautiful beaches. But there’s so much more beyond the coastline.

Sitting on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia is home to hundreds of volcanoes and dramatic mountain peaks.

I came for the mountains, and they definitely stole the show.

Mt Agung | 3,031 m

Mount Agung is an active stratovolcano and the highest point on the island of Bali. It dominates the surrounding landscape and even influences the island’s climate, particularly rainfall patterns.

This climb was steep, rocky and no joke, scrambling over loose rock and gravel, with plenty of rockfall on both the ascent and descent. The early morning temperatures near the summit were freezing, and cold-weather gear was absolutely necessary. Unfortunately, I had only carried a light fleece.

Mt Agung reminded me that no matter how much you think you’ve prepared, nature really does not care about your plans.

Mt Batur | 1,717 m

First hike in Bali and she came with a beautiful sunrise.

Mount Batur is an active volcano sitting within the centre of two calderas in Kintamani, Bali.
Rated easy to moderate, it’s one of Bali’s most popular hikes especially for those sunrise views.

You can hike all the way to the summit or take a jeep partway up if you’d rather let the wheels do some of the work.

Bali is basically a playground of volcanoes, from sacred, towering peaks to misty jungle highlands. by @le_kariuki

I met my younger self for coffee today.
She was 21, anxious, and trying desperately to fit in.
I am in my late 30s, celebrating our birthday, and completely at peace.

She ordered a round of chaotic shots,
I ordered a glass of champagne and a hot green tea.
She asked if we ever made it through the uncertainty,
I told her we graduated, built the career, and even went back to school.

She admitted she felt stagnant and afraid of the future,
I told her we now collect an interesting skill every year,
she whispered that she wanted to see the world,
I told her we travel and pick up the most adventurous hobbies.
she cried because she felt like an outsider who didn’t belong,
I told her we stopped trying to blend in because we found our tribe, a beautiful group of people where our kind of weird is completely okay.

She looked at me, eyes full of wonder, and asked if it gets better.
I smiled, held her hands, and told her that today, we are living the exact dreams we prayed for.
