To the greatest dad a woman could ask for. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. You have always loved me and taken an interest. You went to my bowling matches and bought McDonalds for me and my friends even though we were terrible. You went on my field trips if they ever lined up with your visits. You always put me first and I can’t tell you enough how much that means to me. You are and will always be the one person I’m afraid to disappoint the most even though you have never been disappointed in any of the decisions I have made. You allowed me to grow into the loud strong feminist that fights for what she believes in without a second thought. You are a treasure to my sister and I. Thank you for teaching me to be responsible. Thank you for teaching me to be hardworking. Thank you for teaching me what it means to be a good parent. Thank you for being a dad not only to me but my friends as well. So I made this video the day the protest began and I decided not to post it. I didn’t want to take away from the movement but I have also been pretty silent about how this is all affecting me. So here it goes. Growing up, I hated being black because I was told that I wasn’t good enough. I was told that Black people weren’t allowed to be intelligent. I was told Black was not beautiful. I was told that black hair was nappy. I believed all these people telling me that my body was not good enough. I believed this until I was in high school. I never hated other people but believed they were far more beautiful than my black could ever be. I believed that there was something wrong with my blackness because I let ignorant people tell me so. I wore my hair naturally for the first time my senior year of high school. My curls were damaged from the years of heat and chemicals placed on my hair. I left so insecure because pretty girls were defined as skinny girls with long hair and barely wore make up. I was fat with short hair curly hair and winged my eyeliner long enough to fly. Today, I haven’t applied heat to my hair in 3 years. I still wing my eyeliner and I am still fat. I have learned to love my curls and I am still learning to love my blackness. I have two tattoo reminders that my blackness is just as beautiful. The only thing is that others seem to still have a problem with it. Why is whiteness held to a higher power over blackness? We are just as capable if not more since we really know how to love and appreciate other people. As a black woman, I am constantly the token. I constantly explain my existence and I have no problem doing it because I know I was ignorant to my blackness however, DO NOT EXPECT OTHERS TO WILLINGLY EXPLAIN THEIR BLACKNESS TO YOU. We are not obligated to explain anything to you. Even though I attended a PWI, I learned to find my voice against the injustices I face through my intersectional identity as a black women. I have learned that the system will continue to exist as long as people continue to choose to remain ignorant. Yes, I said choose. More than half of the things Ive learned in class is online. Choosing to be ignorant is a privledge by @leacakes88
