This is the most humbling act of giving there is, after giving life itself. There is nothing like having your child look at you while they receive this vital mixture of ingredients created by your own tiny body. It is the most beautiful, most intimate moment, yet somehow also the most public one.

‘Do you want to breastfeed? Why don’t you breastfeed? Is your milk enough? Are you eating enough to nourish your child? Why do you want to stop? It’s only a year!’

I’m not sure people are aware of the physical toll it takes on a woman to feed her child, the fact that you can’t be away for more than 45 minutes before being needed again. In our society, it is considered obscene to breastfeed in public. So it becomes yet another task that needs to be done while making sure it goes unnoticed.

This campaign came out as a completely new format for me, for YS. I’ve been asking myself for a long time what actually defines us as women. Then the list kept growing: as Lebanese women, as mothers, daughters, professionals, wives… all these versions of a woman that can exist at once.

‘Work, but not too much.
Be a mother, but don’t forget to be social.
Build a career, but only once your kids don’t need you as much.
Be the bent 3ayle, the devoted mother, the loving wife, the friend that keeps up - and somewhere in between, still have a goal of your own.’

When I had a daughter of my own, I suddenly saw my mother through a different lens - all the sacrifices she made, all the versions of herself she put away just to be called “a mother” instead of her own person. I see them now. Her story is mine too - the same way it’s my Teta Affat’s, and my Teta Samira’s. I used to think my story wasn’t one worth telling, until I realized that the woman I choose to be today will become part of my daughter’s story tomorrow.

Not a single shelf has been touched at Peter’s Gents Hairdresser since the 80s. When we asked if we could photograph the shop, Karim, who left Iraq and a cinematic career behind, agreed on one condition: “Play me some Fairuz.”
