Three Years ago today something unimaginable happened… since then, something unimaginable happened… today, I am not shocked by the unimaginable, I am convinced that humanity has been challenged like so many times before in history and humanity failed… over 1200 Jewish people were brutally murdered and tortured and raped and abused, over 250 Jewish beings were taken hostage including children and were raped tortured starved abused and killed, thousands left injured…. The rise of Jew hate since then doesn’t shock me, I grew up with Jew hate in Soviet Russia since before I even knew I am a Jew… now my 22 year old child is scared to walk outside her hostel in South Asia in her sandals because the sandals look Israeli, she will be called out and verbally assaulted and hated for being Jewish …. Now my ten year old has to fight off another ten year olds antisemitic assaults and threats in New York…. None of this will change… but the Jewish people will continue to live, stay resilient and breathe for those who can no longer! We are Am Yisrael! 🇮🇱🙏

Settled Memory by Lola de Miguel 144 inches x 64 inches aprox 3,65 meters x 1,62 meters). Acrylic and medium on canvas. This painting is part of the exhibit Notes from Daughters curated by Leah Kogen Elimeah. On display until October 22nd in Brooklyn ( 55 Anchorage Place, Dumbo, NYC) For notes from daughters I have been thinking about what remains of a parent child relationship after many years have passed. This painting comes from that distance. #lolademiguel #bacistudio #colorexpressionism #notesfromdaughters #leahelimeliah taken in Baci Studio by @leahelimeliah

This Thursday, October 8, from 6:30–8:30 PM, join our panelists @chriskraus7 @douglasrushkoff and @shedlinallan for a conversation about the relationships that shape us and the dynamics of those relationships that shape our culutre.
Fathers and daughters, men and women, private relationships and public systems, gender and culture, social media and our shared humanity.

At a moment when social structures are being closely examined, @notesfromdaughters Notes from Daughters asks how paternal relationsips take shape within patriarchal systems and how women across generations internalize, challenge, and redefine their sense of self amidst these constructs…

The backstory to my work on show in New York at @notesfromdaughters:
The individual elements chart my arc of progress from private personal catharsis to public exhibitions, group work & political protest.

I carved the tryptych of sculptures in the wake of my own #MeToo court case, breaking 30 years of silence. I cut directly into the stone with little prior planning as an act of reconciliation with my body. My safety glasses steamed up with embarrassment as I worked, & I remember having to rub the salty residue of my tears from the glass.

I was transformed by the experience of sculpting - & then sharing - this work. Until then I had only told other people's stories in stone, via memorials & architectural adornment. It was a revelation to realise the more I expressed my deepest inner self, the more the work resonated with the private experience of others.
This led me to create casts of the originals (coloured in various hues to differentiate from the original stonecarvings) which now live in private votive spaces around the world.

In 2025 I set up a group project called SHAME ENDS HERE to show the ongoing prevalence & longterm impact of s3xual assault. Using @suzanne.lacy 's groundbreaking project #threeweeksinmay as a starting point, the Make Your Mark collective created a visceral ink-soaked map of the 1,436 cases reported in our region over one year. In addition we presented personal accounts from around the world in a Book of Testimonies + short film; SHAME ENDS HERE. Full credit to @jjjjjen.joy for the embroidered text & @catherinemay for the hand-made book 🌟
How does this work relate to 'Notes from Daughters'? A subtext to many of the testimonies spoke of lack of protection & support at home, leading to low self-worth & lack of reporting.

The impact fathers can have on the lives of their daughters will be discussed alongside the artwork this Thursday, 8th October, 6.30 - 8.30, at Baci Studio, 55 Anchorage Place, Dumb, Brooklyn NY.
Speakers include Allan Shedlin of the Dadvocacy Consulting Group, @douglasruskoff & @chriskrauss7 with @leahelimeliah

There’s something special about hearing an artist speak about the work in their own words.

For Notes From Daughters, we sat down with these incredible women to learn more about the relationships that shaped the pieces they created.

Their work invites us to look a little closer at our own relationships. The things we carry, the things we leave unsaid, and the ways love can show up differently in every family.

We’re so grateful to these women for sharing something so personal with us, and for creating work that gives all of us a reason to reflect. 🤍 by @leahelimeliah
