Notes from Daughters (10/14 7-9 @bacistudiodumbo ) brings together 18 national and international contemporary women artists working across painting, sculpture, photography, multimedia, textile, film, and music to explore one of the most formative relationships in a woman’s life: the relationship between fathers and daughters.
Through the exhibition, performances, film, and public dialogue, the project asks:
How do fathers shape female identity?
How do women inherit love, expectation, shame, freedom, and belonging?
What does it mean to be female?
❓
At a time when societal structures are being critically examined, “Notes from Daughters” provides a timely reflection on the enduring impact of paternal relationships within  patriarchal systems. It offers insights into the ways these dynamics have been internalized, contested, and redefined by women across generations.

The backstory to my work on show in New York at @notesfromdaughters:
The individual elements chart my arc of progress from private personal catharsis to public exhibitions, group work & political protest.

I carved the tryptych of sculptures in the wake of my own #MeToo court case, breaking 30 years of silence. I cut directly into the stone with little prior planning as an act of reconciliation with my body. My safety glasses steamed up with embarrassment as I worked, & I remember having to rub the salty residue of my tears from the glass.

I was transformed by the experience of sculpting - & then sharing - this work. Until then I had only told other people's stories in stone, via memorials & architectural adornment. It was a revelation to realise the more I expressed my deepest inner self, the more the work resonated with the private experience of others.
This led me to create casts of the originals (coloured in various hues to differentiate from the original stonecarvings) which now live in private votive spaces around the world.

In 2025 I set up a group project called SHAME ENDS HERE to show the ongoing prevalence & longterm impact of s3xual assault. Using @suzanne.lacy 's groundbreaking project #threeweeksinmay as a starting point, the Make Your Mark collective created a visceral ink-soaked map of the 1,436 cases reported in our region over one year. In addition we presented personal accounts from around the world in a Book of Testimonies + short film; SHAME ENDS HERE. Full credit to @jjjjjen.joy for the embroidered text & @catherinemay for the hand-made book 🌟
How does this work relate to 'Notes from Daughters'? A subtext to many of the testimonies spoke of lack of protection & support at home, leading to low self-worth & lack of reporting.

The impact fathers can have on the lives of their daughters will be discussed alongside the artwork this Thursday, 8th October, 6.30 - 8.30, at Baci Studio, 55 Anchorage Place, Dumb, Brooklyn NY.
Speakers include Allan Shedlin of the Dadvocacy Consulting Group, @douglasruskoff & @chriskrauss7 with @leahelimeliah
