After the fair

The night before the fair, I was worried that no one would connect with my work.

But so many people stopped, looked closely, and asked questions. Seeing them spend time with paintings I had put so much care into meant a lot to me.

After the fair, I kept in touch with one of my collectors on Instagram. Through our conversations, I learned more about why she loved my work. It made me wonder about the other people I had met, too.

It was my first fair, and I was nervous. I talked a lot about why I make these paintings and what they mean to me. Looking back, I wish I had asked more about what they meant to the people standing in front of them.

I keep thinking about my first collectors and everyone who took the time to listen and share a little of themselves with me. Next time, I’d love to hear more of their stories.

These conversations also made me think about why I’m drawn to certain works. The things I love carry something of the life I’ve lived and the memories I hold.

Why did I stop in front of this painting?

Maybe looking at art is about more than understanding the work. Maybe something in the artist’s life meets something in our own. And in that moment, we discover something about ourselves we hadn’t noticed before.

Because of its size, I had to take Before Light out of the fair a little early for transport. But just 30 minutes before closing, a collector called and rushed over.

By then, the piece had already left the fair, but she still decided to purchase it without seeing it in person again.

And just like that, Before Light found its new home in Rhode Island. 🤍

Such an unexpected and meaningful way to end the fair. 🩶🖤 by @leahlim.art

These paintings change throughout the day as they interact with natural light. They become especially beautiful when sunlight comes through a window and falls across the surface, creating shifting patterns of light and window shadows.

This piece, Light Note No. 02, found its new home in Venice Beach. 🤍🖤✨ by @leahlim.art

About Me 03: Outtake

Thought the camera was only filming my hands. Apparently not. 😂

About Me 03

Why do I make these marks with a spatula?

It started simply. I liked the proportions of the small rectangular mark made by a 2 inch spatula and wanted to repeat that form across the surface.

But I soon realized that no two marks could ever be exactly the same. Even with the same tool and the same gesture, each one changed with the pressure, direction, and amount of paint.

At first, those differences felt like imperfections. Then I began to see how much they resembled life.

We move toward our goals, but life rarely goes exactly as planned. We fail, take detours, and sometimes make choices we later regret. Looking back, though, I realize that many of those choices were the best I could make at that moment. All of those experiences accumulated to make me who I am today.

Maybe finding our center isn't about never losing our balance. Maybe it's about finding our way back, again and again.

So I make one mark, then another. None are exactly alike. On their own, they may seem imperfect, but as they accumulate, they begin to relate to one another and eventually become something whole.

Maybe life is made in much the same way.

This repetitive process has become a kind of meditation for me, a way of accepting the time that has passed and feeling grateful for the life I have now.

I don't repeat the gesture to create one perfect mark.
I repeat it to let many imperfect marks become something whole.

So today, I'm grateful for my imperfect self, too. I'm simply adding one more mark to yesterday's and continuing forward. by @leahlim.art

ABOUT ME 02
BLACK.

I paint, but I also love going to galleries and seeing other artists’ work.

There are moments when a work really moves me. I’ve stood in front of James Turrell and Mark Rothko and unexpectedly felt tears in my eyes. I love that moment when art reaches you before you even know why.

But after seeing so many colors, stories, and emotions, sometimes I find myself looking for quiet.

Then I encountered the work of Leebae @leebae.art

Layers of color, emotion, and time had somehow become black. But that black didn’t feel like darkness to me. It felt as if all those colors had been absorbed into one quiet, solid presence.

That stayed with me.

For me, black is never just darkness.
It holds everything that came before.

ABOUT ME 01

I fell in love with moon jars the first time I saw one.

There was something so beautiful about the shape, the narrow foot beneath the wider opening, and the balance it creates.

That unique form is what made me fall in love with them.
