You Seem Sad weaves post-WWII Nagasaki and early-2000s New York City together through the parallel journeys of Keiko—a young unapologetic atomic-bomb survivor rebuilding her life in 1950s Japan—and Student 1, a half-Japanese twenty-something who is reckoning with her career, love and identity in contemporary America. With humor, brutal honesty, and heart, the play intertwines memory, personal pain and history into a layered portrait of two women shaped by different eras yet bound by a shared search for meaning, connection and the pursuit of survival.

Well, we opened the show. Last month, I got to talk to @people about Duncan’s beautiful creative process. I think many men are overrated, so I don’t say this lightly, but Duncan was a true genius. I love his writing. I LOVE every single one of his lyrics in this show. He was poetic and hilarious, smart but unpretentious. It’s been one of the greatest honors of my life to try to protect his work the way he protected me throughout the years we spent making this. I am so proud of what we created together. And if someone had told me everything that was going to happen when I first signed on, I would still do it all over again, just to have had the chance to work with him. I hope you’ll come see @memoirsmusical. Duncan called this his best score, and I think what @sophiaannecaruso is doing with it every night is once in a lifetime. ❤️ Also, did you know that the word “immured” comes from murus, a Latin noun meaning “wall”? It literally means “to wall in” or “to enclose with a wall,” but it can also mean “to imprison.” One might remark, for example, that a woman named Colette, obsessed with the wrong guy and trapped in a prison of her own making, might sing “I am immured.” The more you know. 🌈⭐😉 by @leahnanako

When I told him that finishing the show without him made me feel alone, and that I was anxious, Duncan laughed: “Musicals are never finished, Leah. They just close.”

Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen follows Colette, a young dreamer in 20th-century Paris, who finds her power through writing. While working at the Night Egg, she begins chronicling the fantasies, confessions, and sorrows of her eccentric clients, transforming herself from object to observer. Underneath her sharp intelligence and growing independence, however, Colette has a lingering, destructive attachment to Léon, her childhood love.
