When community comes together, possibility becomes practice. ✊🏾👑

Saturday reminded me what becomes possible when we center our children and create the conditions for them to: imagine, create, learn, rejoice, build, and grow together.

For more than 16 years, beginning in 2010, Kingmakers of Oakland has curated ManUp and Kings in the Making as sacred spaces where Black boys and young men are surrounded by community, culture, knowledge, love, and possibility.

From "Your Health Is Your Wealth" and "Hip Hop Heals" to "Redefining What’s Possible", each gathering has asked our Kings to see themselves, and their futures, more expansively.

Saturday, at our 31st BiAnnual ManUp/Kings in the Making, the invitation was:

🎮 Architects of the Arcade.

Not simply to talk about the future. To build it.

Deep gratitude to Dr. @Sharlonda Gregory, Principal of @metwesthighschool, for opening her school and welcoming our village into the space.

Throughout the day, our Kings engaged in interactive workshops, conversations, creative challenges, gaming, and intergenerational experiences designed to build relationships, spark curiosity, share knowledge, and strengthen their capacity to imagine what is possible for themselves, their families, and their communities.

This gathering was especially powerful because Kings in the Making aligned with @oaklandtechweek

Through our Sankofa Kings program, @kingmakersofoakland is creating an entry point for young people into the local, national, and global conversation around responsible AI.

But our starting point is intentional:

Before Artificial Intelligence, we begin with Ancestral Intelligence.

Before asking what technology can do, we ask our Kings:

WHO are you?
WHOSE are you?

We study the algorithms that existed long before computers, the ways our ancestors organized, communicated, created, healed, protected one another, transferred knowledge, built community, practiced sovereignty, and generated prosperity.

Then we ask:

How can today’s technology serve those same human purposes?

Because our Kings cannot only be consumers of the technology shaping their future. They must become creators. Designers. Builders. Owners... taken in MetWest High School by @leandrewr

Does technology create freedom? My answer to that question is: it depends on who is building it.

The unique aspect of @oaklandtechweek is its creators: community builders, problem solvers, innovators who want to bring power to the people. Community members who believe another world is possible.

It’s such an honor to kick off Oakland Tech Week with community architects, nonprofit leaders, and multi-hyphenates who are being recognized by Poster Child and whose stories are uplifted by visionary leaders like Leandrew Robinson and his team.

Deeply honored to build with you, Oakland, and ever grateful for your mentorship @leandrewr 🙌❤️‍🔥

20 years of marriage! 🥂Year over year we choose us. Day in and day out we choose each other. Through many sunsets and sunrises, both figurative and literal, we have loved and fought to stay whole. Leandrew, my love and best friend, I choose you. From college sweethearts to touring colleges with our teenagers. We’ve built quite a story. Let’s keeping writing together. I love you.🥂 “In all the world, there is no heart for me like yours. In all the world, there is no love for you like mine”. -Maya Angelou by @leandrewr

"I always thought that on our 20th anniversary
I would write you this elaborate poem;

about how our imperfections
made us perfect.

About how you are the closest thing to God
I have ever known.

About how the womb of your love
is more like a garden than a tomb

constantly flourishing
with bountiful fruit,

as we see
presented here
in this room." - Leluche

@kacysunshine mothafreaking Robinson! Here we are. 20 years in. Your love and friendship is in another universe for me. It's hard to fathom the miracle of us, but I vow to cherish it daily, and show you even more how much I adore, need, admire, love and just like you beyond explanation. Thank you for choosing me daily and that party we had was a movie! by @leandrewr

That’s a wrap on our Kings in the Making: The AI² Lab — Ancestral Intelligence × Artificial Intelligence event!

We want to thank our kings for showing up and bringing their creativity, vision, and light into the space. Thank you to our community that made this event a powerful moment to remember.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” — Martin Luther King Jr.

The community and togetherness we experienced this weekend is the kind of love that will continue to drive out hate. We continue to move with love. 🤎🤲🏾
