When I made the heart-wrenching decision to leave Chemawa and Oregon, and move to Vegas to teach, you told me I could go anywhere and do well, but being away from Indian kids would be like trying to live without my nose. Possible, but never quite whole.

You’d remind me to look at God’s thumbnail. Lately, I find myself showing mičhíŋkši the moon and telling him about you. These days, I think a lot about shovels and the hands that leave them behind. Miss you in the forever ways, Dean. ✨🩢

September // ČhaΕ‹wápeǧi Wi πŸ‚πŸ

The moon when the leaves turn brown. A time of gathering, preparing, and change. September was immense. Full of the people I love, work I believe in, things worth tending, and reminders of why I do any of it. 🀎

wasútȟuΕ‹ wí // the moon when things ripen

August has felt like ripening. Seeds planted months - or years - ago finally beginning to show themselves.

Some seasons are for planting.
Some seasons are for waiting.
And some seasons remind you to look around and recognize what has already grown.

August, you were full. 🀎🌱✨

Join us in celebrating Echoes in Mosaic. More than 35 Indigenous students from SFPS Native American Student Services learned from and created with Indigenous artists Bill Coriz and Ehren Kee Natay, educators, and community partners, including Kiksuyapi Collective, through Echoes in Mosaic, a collaborative public art project centered on Indigenous art and culture, youth voices, and community collaboration. Together, participants explored artistic expression and traditional jewelry-making techniques. Designed and composed by Natay, the finished mosaic brings together the creativity, perspectives, and contributions of everyone involved, reflecting the connections shared across generations.

We invite you to commemorate the completion of this project and honor the students, artists, educators, and partners who made it possible.

- Meet the artists and collaborators
- Experience an artist demonstration
- Participate in hands-on community art activities
- Enjoy frybread and refreshments
- Enter for a chance to win door prizes

πŸ“… Wednesday, August 12
πŸ•  5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
πŸ“ Santa Fe Community Gallery (201 W. Marcy St., Santa Fe, NM 87501)

I am excited to share that I have been selected as part of the Indigenous Education Leadership Academy (IELA) - the second cohort of the growing Indigenous Leadership Academy (ILA)! This first-of-its-kind program is dedicated to supporting emerging Indigenous leaders in education through a framework grounded in sovereignty, equity, and community-centered leadership. I am looking forward to how this strengthens my work with @kiksuyapi_collective.

I am honored to be part of this inspiring group and grateful to the @aipinstitute, @cieatasu, @niea1969, and @tuftsuniversity for creating and supporting this opportunity.

Feel free to read about the cohort and learn more: https://lnkd.in/gJBbHNQG

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

@aipinstitute, in collaboration with @cieatasu, @niea1969, and @tuftsuniversity is proud to introduce the Indigenous Education Leadership Academy’s first cohort. Focused on emerging leaders, there is no other leadership program like this in the country.

After a competitive application process, 19 of the 34 applicants were accepted into the cohort. Their demographics represent 13 tribes from 10 states. All participants demonstrated a strong passion for working with and for Indigenous communities and are committed to equity, access and evaluation; Indigenous curriculum and pedagogy; and policy, sovereignty and leadership. Together, they reflect a rich diversity of experiences and perspectives. Congratulations to the cohort!

This groundbreaking program β€” the first of its kind in the nation β€” supports and develops leaders in education working with Indigenous communities through a curriculum rooted in traditional values and guided by community-centered practices.

We are honored to support this remarkable group on their leadership journeys and look forward to the positive change they will create in their communities and beyond. by @leannakdawn
