Google Photos reminded us of this moment—exactly five years ago.

We were living on the 4th floor of our after-school program building.
It wasn’t fancy, but it was ours—filled with chaos, laughter, and daydreams.
We’d pretend we were already in Bali. We set up a rooftop “spa” with gamelan music and the sound of running water from the tap.

That morning looked like any other.
Clover and Aubrey were still asleep.
But something felt different.
I turned to Lucy and said, “I want to wake up in Bali tomorrow.”
She said, “Okay.”

Seven hours later, we were checking the tires and tuning up our old grey Grand Livina.
No bookings. No plan. Just a car full of kids, some snacks, and a wild idea.

We hit the road. I don’t think either of us knew exactly what we were doing.
The only thing in our mind was: get to that strait and trust that things would work themselves out.

We slept in the car at a rest stop that night.
Not quite Bali yet—but we were already far from everything we knew.
Woke up with stiff necks, groggy kids, and full hearts.

Crossing the ocean felt like a symbol.
We didn’t have a clear destination—just this deep pull from the island.
We had no clue what would happen next, but Bali was calling.

We arrived with no hotel booked.
We drove around in the dark, tired and unsure, facing closed doors.
At midnight, just when we were about to give up, we found a room.
It felt like a tiny miracle.

Not long after, we moved into a little villa surrounded by paddy fields.
We carried our stuff, kids, and a lot of hope.
It wasn’t perfect. But we were where we're supposed to be.

People called us crazy.
Maybe we were.

But life can only be understood backwards, and lived forwards.
What we have now is better than anything we could’ve ever planned.

Thank you, universe.
Thank you, five minutes of courage.
Thank you, Bali.
And thank you, dear grey Grand Livina—you’re no longer with us, but you carried us to a new life.

Did that actually happen?

I’m sitting in a cabin in Kintamani right now, still limping, knees and IT bands still sore, wondering if I actually ran my first marathon.

My virgin marathon.

And f*ck, it was hard.

Rolling hills. Feet hurting from the early kilometers. And the last 6km somehow felt harder the closer I got to the finish.

My body wanted to stop. My mind wanted to walk.

But I didn’t walk a single step for 42.195km.

Not always fast. Definitely not pretty. But I kept running.

And somehow, with 200m left, I found another gear and sprinted to the finish.

The whole week feels like a dream.

Thursday: soft opening @harilari
Sunday: virgin marathon.
Tuesday: Mt. Batur with my family.

Life moves ridiculously fast.

So before this disappears into whatever comes next, I'll post this -

Thank you body, brain and spirit.
Thank you family. Thank you @far.ubud
And thank you Maybank Marathon for a beautiful first 42.195km.

Would I do another full marathon?

Maybank Marathon 2026 is a wrap! What an incredible run with a bunch of amazing friends! I set another HM PB today despite still having a ferritin level of 10, and Ray managed to complete his first FM. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 we owe this to @jackahearncoaching for his amazingly flexible and individual coaching.
@far.ubud did it again!! They came all the way south to cheer and support us! Thank you @igor.nowhere for organizing. We are so lucky to call you a friend! 🫶🏼 phew what an incredible day! taken in Bali United Training Centre by @learning.ong

What a race 🙌 kudos to all the runners for completing such a challenging course, especially in this heat 🏅

Special shoutout to @learning.ong for his virgin full marathon and @lucy_lari_lari @manuesposito_ok and @nipuspa for half marathon.

Kudos to our fellow fellow runners @matthew_stoppels and @wisnunn from @laripagibali team 🙌

Kepada Indonesia, saya berharap kalian menonton ini dan terketuk hatinya melihat situasi pulau Lombok saat ini. Perlu diketahui, Lombok ini adalah destinasi yang sangat terkenal di wisatawan asing dan dalam negeri. Kecantikan alam terselimutkan sampah sampah yang dibuang sembarangan. Apakah pemerintah tidak mampu? Apakah pemerintah tidak peduli? Apa memang pemerintah angkat tangan? Indonesia ini milik bersama, milik kita semua, bahkan milik saya yang sudah menetap disini dari 1990. Pemimpin yang baik adalah pemimpin yang dapat bekerjasama demi kemajuan. Saya pwrcaya anda ini pemimpin yang baik tetapi bertemu orang orang yang tidak tepat dilapangan sehingga target tidak ada yang tercapai. Indonesia, diluar sini banyak sekali yang peduli, yang berbakti dan jujur, carilah kami kami ini. Kami siap membantu demi masa depan yang lebih baik untuk generasi yang akan datang.
