I thought we were going to pick up Garrett‘s friend Levy at a restaurant. Turns out my closest friends and family were waiting to surprise the poop outta me. That was one of the sweetest and most meaningful moments of my life. I was completely shocked. I had absolutely no idea this was happening. To see all of those beautiful faces who I love so deeply in one space was something I’ll never forget. I can’t thank you enough @garrett.jjones and @universelov3 . Thank you for organizing this whole thing and being such good liars and keeping it such a good secret. I can’t believe you did this. Shoutout to the OGs, Dad and Mom, for their beautiful speeches. I love you guys so much.Thank you @jt_zen and @sustainabae and everyone else who contributed to making it possible. Thank you so much everyone who showed up and who sent me some birthday love. I’m so blessed with the amazing humans in my life. Knowing you makes life richer, juicier, and so much better. Taking this energy with me into this next year. Heart and spirit full.••••#Gratitude #surpriseparty #surprise #love by @leecholodenko

What I think we’re seeing in the world is a lot of masculine energy going out undirected. It’s not grounded in compassion. It’s not grounded in love. It’s trying to achieve at the expense of others, to validate itself, to prove its worthiness. We can feel compassion for this. Of course anyone trying to prove their worthiness has been hurt. The solution isn’t to be “less masculine” or punish men. It’s masculinity that’s first rooted in the heart, in one’s capacity to love themselves and others. This is work that we, as men, must do if we want to be fulfilled, contribute purposefully to our world, and to create healthy and meaningful relationships. Had a beautiful time on this panel on healthy masculinity. Grateful for the conversation.•••#healthymasculinity #masculinity #mentalhealth #selfcompassion #personaldevelopment by @leecholodenko

I didn’t have healthy masculinity modeled for me growing up. Later in life I got lucky with some extraordinary male mentors but I had to define what it meant to be a man largely from scratch. What I’ve come to believe is that true transformation starts with developing a loving, compassionate relationship with ourselves. Learning to be gentle with our mistakes, to embrace our flaws, and to love ourselves anyway. That becomes fundamental to a happier, more fulfilling experience of life. This is nurturing work. And for most men, it’s unfamiliar territory. We haven’t been trained for it. I wasn’t either. But if we don’t learn to bring that love to ourselves, we end up placing that emotional burden on the people around us. And we stay dependent on outside sources for our sense of worth and self-esteem.This is nothing to be hard on ourselves for, but it points to one of our richest opportunities for growth.Learning to love ourselves isn’t woo woo soft bullshit. It’s the foundation of real growth, healthy self-confidence, and fulfilling relationships.Had a beautiful time on this panel talking about healthy masculinity. It’s a topic I have not talked about publicly before. When I was in my 20s, I experienced a lot of pain. Emotional, physical and spiritual pain and discomfort. And what began to move me out of that pain was learning to be accepting, loving and compassionate towards myself. That continues to be my North Star.Learning to love ourselves is one of the most powerful things we can do. It sets the foundation for a happier, more fulfilling life and for deeper, more meaningful relationships with others. One simple yet powerful practice to cultivate a loving relationship with oneself is to simply get curious about what’s happening inside of you. Create the time and space to listen. To notice what’s going on in your mind, your body, your emotions. The act of observing your inner experience is itself a loving act. It sends a signal that you care enough about yourself to want to know what’s happening inside of you.Think about what it would feel like if someone sat down next to you and said, “I just want to get to know you. I want to listen deeply.” That would feel like love. That’s exactly what we offer ourselves every time we make a conscious effort to observe our inner experience. This video was taken during a session of our Basics of Self-Mastery program. Recap from the Healthy Masculine Salon:Healthy masculinity isn’t about labels. It’s about awareness. Presence. Responsibility. It’s knowing when to lead… and when to listen. When to hold… and when to soften. Most men were never taught how to feel safely. So we learned to fix, control, or withdraw. The work now?Stop outsourcing your emotional world.Sit with it. Understand it. Speak it—cleanly.Truth without kindness is harm.Silence without truth becomes resentment.Real strength looks like:– taking responsibility for your inner state– regulating your nervous system– expressing truth without aggression– creating safety through presenceMasculine energy isn’t dominance. It’s the ability to hold a container where truth, emotion, and growth can exist. And maybe the real shift is this:It’s not about becoming “a better man.”It’s about becoming more fully human. by @leecholodenko

Suffering = Pain × ResistanceA snippet from yesterday’s Basics of Self-Mastery program. Pain is natural part of life. It’s part of the human experience. But what we are exploring is the idea that a lot of what we experience as suffering is actually the resistance to our pain and challenges. The beliefs that argue with reality, like “this shouldn’t be happening,” or “I need something else to happen,” that fighting with reality creates the conditions for our suffering — not the pain itself. For instance, the feeling of sadness. It’s easy to think I suffer because I feel sad. But if I simply accept the feeling, and let it come and go as one of the many emotions I feel throughout the day, I don’t really suffer. Suffering comes when I try to make it go away. When I try to make it different, cover over it, or ignore it. And there are many tricky and creative ways we do this as humans. And I notice this in myself all the time. I observe beliefs about my life that keep me locked in a cycle of aggravation, stagnation or sadness. What’s been powerful for me in my life isn’t trying to get rid of pain, but rather practicing just being with what’s happening in the moment. Not fixing it right away, not trying to make it different, just doing my best to simply acknowledge it, square up with it, and do my best to accept it. To breathe into it and let it be. And when I can do that, my experience shifts. I feel less reactive. I slow down, feel more compassion and see more clearly. I can access the part of me that is unconditionally loving and clear in my boundaries, values and intentions. It’s from this space that I can then make a more powerful decision about how I move forward into the next moment. That is the beautiful thing about acceptance. It’s not passive. It’s the first step in making a powerful choice about how I move forward from here. This equation is given to us by Christopher Forman and Bryan Ungard in their book, The Practice of Self-Management. •••#personalgrowth #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #personaldevelopment #acceptance by @leecholodenko

For the past few years, we’ve been teaching leadership development to executives, leadership teams and MBA students, helping them reduce stress, lead under pressure, and build more meaningful relationships with others. I’m excited to share that we’re offering our program, The Basics of Self-Mastery, publicly for the first time this Spring. 😊This program is for entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, business leaders, owners, and those who are experiencing stress, overwhelm or challenging relationships at work, and who want practical tools for navigating those challenges. It’s for those who feel the call to become the highest version of themselves as human beings and leaders. Link in bio for more info and application. We kick off on March 5th! •••#leadership #consciousleadership #consciouscapitalism #leecholodenko by @leecholodenko
