POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I’m putting together a new video series for golf coaches, exploring the role of speed and distance in golf performance — why they’ve become such important contributors, how our understanding has evolved, and what that means for the way we coach.
The aim is to challenge assumptions, share ideas and encourage a more informed, evidence-based approach to developing speed and performance . WHY HAS SPEED AND DISTANCE BECOME SUCH A FOCUS IN GOLF? 🚀
Six key developments have changed the way we understand distance as a performance contributor.
1. TECHNOLOGY 📡
Launch monitors allow us to measure club speed, ball speed, strike and ball-flight variables with increasing accuracy and convenience.
2. BETTER PERFORMANCE DATA 📊
Strokes-gained analysis has improved our understanding of how distance contributes to scoring and competitive performance.
3. PHYSICAL PREPARATION 💪
Golf-specific strength, power and athletic development have become more established, reinforcing the understanding that speed is a trainable quality.
4. THE EVOLUTION OF COACHING 🧠
A greater understanding of biomechanics, movement and skill acquisition has expanded how coaches assess and develop a player’s speed potential.
5. THE SEARCH FOR A COMPETITIVE EDGE 🏆
Players and coaches are continually looking for ways to gain an advantage. Distance can create shorter approach shots and more scoring opportunities.
6. SUCCESS AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL 🔥
High-profile players such as Bryson DeChambeau have demonstrated how developing speed and distance can become a significant part of a competitive strategy.
THE IMPLICATION FOR COACHES
We have better technology, stronger performance evidence and a more developed understanding of how speed can be influenced.
The challenge is to identify each player’s opportunity and determine how additional speed can translate into better golf performance.
Speed is not the whole answer. But understanding its contribution to performance is an essential part of modern golf coaching.

PAR-5 18TH.
BROCKET HALL.
WATCH WHAT HAPPENS…
Sometimes numbers don’t really tell the story.
This is Joe Miller, two-time World Long Drive Champion, on the par-5 18th at Brocket Hall.
And yes… he almost drives the green.
When you tell most golfers how far a genuine long driver can hit a golf ball, it’s difficult to comprehend.
But seeing it is different.
This is what exceptional clubhead speed, ball speed and strike can do.. Excellent camera work by @gjg001 by @leecoxgolf

STRANGE BALLS IN THE BASKET! 🏌️
My colleague at work found this in the basket — and it’s actually a fascinating bit of golf history.
This is a Cayman golf ball, developed by MacGregor in the 1980s with Jack Nicklaus involved in the project.
The idea was simple: make the ball fly less so you could play golf on less land.
It was the same size as a normal golf ball, but much lighter, with raised bumps rather than conventional dimples.
It flew at roughly half the distance of a normal golf ball.
The reason? Grand Cayman had limited space, so the Cayman ball helped make an 18-hole golf course possible on a much smaller area.
There was, however, one slight problem…
THE WIND! 🌬️
The Cayman Islands Golf Association says the Caribbean wind could actually blow a lofted Cayman ball back over the golfer’s head!
Not something you find in the basket every day.
Anyone remember these? by @leecoxgolf
