ICE activity is increasing, all across the city & in neighboring towns. A community member was abducted from my local big box store parking lot, just minutes before I joined neighborhood watch, the other day. There have been recent announcements around ICE/DHS abduction quotas of 3,000 human beings per day. This is inclusive of children, who we are keeping in cages.

We all have duty to speak & to act, in every way that is accessible to ourselves, with respect to each of our own risk factors & abilities. I promise there is at least one role for every single one of us, in support of impacted communities &/or in resistance to the powers that be.

One of the most personally fulfilling, & LOWER risk activities that I am engaged in is school pickup support. Some neighbors engage in this particular work simply by sitting out on their stoops, during drop off/pickup hours, drinking their coffee or working on laptops. ALL EYES ON DECK. Some folks monitor group chats, from office chairs, couches, & beds: passing off info remotely, raising any calls for community support, as needed. Some lead walking school busses & lil groups of kids on bikes, dropping each at home (a position that involves more vetting, obviously, but one starts to see how the possibilities for engagement abound). My role feels very much like a crossing guard, as I monitor traffic for ICE, nodding at parents & laughing at children along their way.

For this month’s F#ck Your Feelings 2nd Thursdays: A Rotating Activity Jubilee! meeting, we will be sharing our favorite resistance music! WHELP. I took home a cold from the farmers market, but at least the soup I made with the squash & other fresh veg has kept me upright enough to make my daily school pickup support shifts. ¡Si, se puede!
