Keteleer Gallery is very pleased to announce the representation of Japanese artist Nami Yokoyama.

Nami Yokoyama (b. 1986, Gifu, Japan) is a contemporary Japanese painter based in Aichi (JP) whose work examines the relationship between words, value, memory and identity. After completing her BFA (2010) and MFA (2012) in painting at Aichi University of the Arts, she developed a practice centred on still lifes and neon motifs that question how language shapes perception. Her oeuvre also extends to other media, including delicate ceramics and intimate drawings.

Yokoyama’s first solo exhibition with the gallery will open September 5th, 2026.

Daan Gielis
U'll be fine

"Neon light carries an ambiguous promise. It is intrusive and seductive, distant and intimate, cheap and precious at the same time. In Gielis’s hands, the medium gains a polyphonic charge: his neons do not speak in slogans. Their colors are bright, but their message is often nuanced. By abstracting and distorting symbols, Gielis slows down our interaction with a visual language we usually read automatically. The neon sculptures embody the paradox in which our social lives are entangled: the attempt to express a deeply personal story in a relentlessly generic language.
In art history, neon is known as a medium that balances between commerce and art, between the public and the personal. From Bruce Nauman, who fragments language and the body through neon, to Tracey Emin, who uses it to express vulnerability and intimacy—the medium is repeatedly employed to reflect on how meaning arises, how emotion is visualized. Gielis, too, aligns himself with this lineage, though with a distinctly contemporary perspective: his neons are not merely “images in light,” but fields of tension in visual form, in which the intimate is magnified into a shared experience." - from exhibition text by @leemans_koen

Born 1968, Wilrijk (BE)

Stefan Serneels is a Belgian contemporary artist living and working in Aarschot, Belgium. He works mainly with drawing and sometimes film, with an expressive core in figurative draughtsmanship and compositional layering.

His visual language builds from fragments of film stills, photographs, old magazines, and digital images, which he recomposes and transforms into new, dream-like scenes. In Serneels’ work, everyday interiors, stairways, objects, and figures are often decontextualized or subtly distorted to evoke a sense of estrangement or silent narrative tension.

His works are marked by restrained palettes (often monochrome or limited tones) and an atmospheric balance between order and uncanny interruption. He is also interested in the psychological and symbolic dimensions of space, memory, and alienation.

Born in Havana, Cuba, 1955
Living and working in Ghent, Belgium, since 1990

Ricardo Brey is a visual artist. His multidisciplinary practice—spanning drawing, sculpture, and installation—centers an exploration of the origins of humanity and our place in the world.

In 1990 Brey was invited to participate in Documenta IX, Kassel (Germany). This marked a pivotal moment in his career and solidified his move to Europe. Brey initially gained recognition in the 1970s and 1980s as a prominent member of Volumen I, an avant-garde artist collective instrumental to the emergence of a new wave of Cuban artists after the Revolution.

Over the decades, Brey’s work has garnered numerous prestigious accolades, including the Prize from the Flemish Ministry of Culture and a Guggenheim Fellowship for Installation Art and Sculpture. These honors have cemented his reputation as a global prescence in contemporary art.

Brey’s work is rooted in a decolonial perspective, challenging dominant Western narratives while celebrating the rich syncretic traditions of the African diaspora, particularly within Afro-Cuban culture. His art embodies creolization—the blending of multiple cultural traditions into something entirely new—by merging African, European, and Caribbean influences. Through his rhizomatic approach, Brey’s work resists linear, hierarchical structures, instead developing organically and interconnectedly, much like a root system, with ideas branching out in multiple, non-linear directions.

Brey’s reinterpretations of the Santería pantheon fuse classical motifs with a distinctly Caribbean aesthetic, creating a unique and powerful visual language. His work exemplifies a deeply personal and culturally resonant approach to art, uniting disparate traditions and reimagining them for contemporary audiences.
