Happy 65th birthday to you Bob— you survived hurricanes and fires, earthquakes and election year coverages, war zones and exploding bombs, four incredible children and 38 years of marriage to this old gal. Bruce Springsteen showed up at our first Stand Up for Heroes show 20 years ago, before we had any idea if this would even work. Jon Stewart was there in those first few years when the star power really helped us help more people.

This November 9th we’re celebrating 20 years of the Foundation, our 20th show — and Bruce and Jon will be back!

Scary headlines, wildfires, human and natural disasters… here’s a reminder we all have a little “Mr. Brightside,” even almost 40 years post wedding day (looking at you, Bob Woodruff.) When the world gets you down – get out on the floor and dance on. Shout out to the Etsy witch whose incantation ensured the skies cleared and kudos to the video team who edited this joy filled piece. As America celebrates our 250th anniversary, we’re reflecting on the people, communities, and moments that have shaped our nation’s history.

This year is especially meaningful for us as we celebrate 20 years of serving veterans, service members, and their families.

Anniversaries give us a chance to look back at how far we’ve come, honor those who helped us get here, and recommit to the next generation of heroes who have our backs.

Two months before you were born, your father left the law to become a journalist. His path was veering toward an unhappy husband and father, and that first local news job transformed him. Fifteen years later, one phone call shattered our world. As our eldest and only son, Dad’s injury in Iraq was especially hard on you. It would have been perfectly understandable if you’d chosen to play it safe; accepted the mediocre desk job, re-booked the all-inclusive vacation, married the girl who almost fit Cinderella’s slipper. But you went the other way. You understood that one could die as easily stepping off a Manhattan curb as by an IED in a warzone.
We are given but one, short fuse of a life. A nanosecond; even if we’re lucky enough to die in our beds at 104. You chose to burn your fuse brightly, to bushwhack a path and explore the planet. You designed a life you loved and determined to wait until someone recognized that light in you and beamed it back. And then came Nicole, throwing off her own short, bright fuselight… moving through the world like a comet. As you began operating in tandem, you were learning how to be the stone foundation when the other was the window, to offer a supporting beam when one climbed the stairs. Over time, you’ve been constructing your shelter, your private place for two. Look around you now…marvel at this new structure you’ve built as a married couple. And know that your Dad and I can’t wait to spend what’s left of our own short fuses in that home with you. by @leewoodruff

I love this picture because laughing with my son Mack is one of life’s rich moments. We share the same sense of humor, and every time he comes home it makes my day. A hug from this guy goes straight to my heart and we can instantly crack each other up with one goofy voice we invented. My only son and eldest child gets married tomorrow. He found a partner who brings out the best version of him. Nicole is a force multiplier in all the right ways. Almost 35 years ago this little baby boy rocked our world when he arrived and this weekend he will rock it again when he stands at the altar and reads his vows. Life throws so many things at us we can never anticipate. Choosing a partner is both an act of faith and a crap shoot. It’s the one thing as parents we have no tangible way to teach our children - who to choose and who to love. But I’m betting on Mack and Nicole. And my mother’s heart is full. by @leewoodruff
