Ron Mueck - « Angel » 1997

This work is one of Muck’s early masterpieces. Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection, held at London’s Royal Academy in 1997, brought the artist into the spotlight. The exhibition subsequently toured to Berlin (Hamburger Bahnhof - Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, 1998-1999) and then to New York (Brooklyn Museum, 1999-2000), both of which exhibited this work
Angel was created after Mueck saw Giovanni Battista Tiepolo’s Allegory with Venus and Time (c. 1754-1758) at the National Gallery in London. In the painting, Venus is accompanied by an elderly winged man representing « Time » and Mueck drew inspiration from Tiepolo’s depiction of an angel differing from the archetypal norm of the young messenger. Mueck’s angel surprises the viewer with the ordinariness of his body, his diminutive size in relation to the real stool, and the despondent resignation of his expression. His wings are proud and majestic, but he has no allegorical mission to attend to.

Shot with my fujifilm X100VI at Mori Art Museum in Tokyo.
