it’s been exactly a year since a handful of exceptional creatures hiked up the windiest Pendleton county mountain in our best and blackest to celebrate the magick of a pair of my most very favorite people.

then we adopted our photographer, made a giant fire, sang Karaoke better than anyone ever has, and burnt the beejezus out of ourselves drinking hot tea out of recycled cider bottles because it was a effing freezing.

my heart is still full.

Some of your people are just going to know you. To the point they’ll, randomly, drop little emotion grenades and you just stand their dumbfounded while the feelings shrapnel their way into you. Midge walked through the door this afternoon, post harvest festival just to drop this off. “well I know you always see you catching bats and I wanted to make something spooky because it’s Halloween…”
then she goes on to tell me it’s made from bits of black stained glass from the broken window that she gifted from a mutual who’s midway through restoring a 200 something year old Victorian in East Wheeling… and what?!
Come on?! How do you emote enough energy into saying Thank You for this incredibly thoughtful piece of handmade art… because I know many many words but now I’ve got a mouth full of emotion grenade…

Midge incidentally is a Halloween baby… this is one facet of a couple dozen that she has been, is now, always was, and ever will be cooler than us lesser mortals.

It’s 5am as I finish this… I’ll be at Clientele’s brunch Sunday at noon… where at least I get to support @midgeskitchenwheeling … Clientele brunch is rad.

Insta is forcing me to post this as a reel… i don’t think I can shut that off… i am disgruntled. But I’m more dumbstruck and thankful. by @leftytreehugger

The only thing better than Dutch in this photo is the homemade sauce her Mama made.

the Dutchess did not get sauce which is probably my fault because I thought pooches couldn’t have nightshades… which it turns out they totally can. So now I feel like I owe someone a Kong. by @leftytreehugger

There’s been a strange overlap in the theme of an odd handful of conversations and it revolves around good paper. It started, and I’ve never until now been excited to get one of these, with a bill that I opened. It helps that I like the fella that sent the invoice but it also helped that it came on a nearly translucent piece of highest quality, almost vellum like, amber tinted, paper. Real stationery is uncommon. In his case it’s also moderately intimidating. If you’ve never been intimidated by a piece of loose leaf, swing by, even their font, with it’s juuuust noticeable serifs says, “We’ve been at this for a minute, we’re good at it. Which for those of you just showing up is to say, We aren’t the ones and this isn’t the day.” If Elrond Half-Elven had a legal team at Rivendell, they probably had the same paper stock. No, I didn’t waste any time paying that bill and I sent it with a note on my own, much less impressive, stationery telling my friend most of what I just told you.

As I settled into my cage today, I found my Boss had left an envelope for me. Christmas card, addressed to us both… not uncommon… and I was happy to see Lisa and Tombeck written inside… I put it down… I appreciated the art, Lisa knows how I feel about trees, which is that I prefer them alive and rooted and it took me all of 20 seconds, because I can be a bit dim, to acknowledge that my nice tree card felt like an awfully nice piece of paper…I know this texture… watercolor paper… because this is a… and I hollered for Morgan and then Dakota so they could see it ( and confirm I wasn’t just excited ) but she did… she BobRossed up a happy little watercolor Spruce, and USPeeSsed it like a Hallmark.

I told Suz I called dibs on this. It’s a tree, automatic dibs per the rules.
It’s probably not the only handmade card I’ll get this year. I’m real lucky to have some art baddies in my DMs but I guess my point, if I’ve really got one, is, hand write more things, use the good paper, send your friends art.

Half past one and I’m writing about paper when I have gobs of things left on my list, this started out as a thank you to @lisabeck, glad I got there four paragraphs deep. by @leftytreehugger

If you’re driving through St. Louis, with a triumvirate of your favorite humans who all happen to derive a measure of their empowerment by lacing hubs, and bearings, and wheels to their feet and being rad as heck, you really stop caring how many hours the drive home is as soon as the big old church doors of @sk8liborius open… it’s glorious… they’re more glorious… i’ve gotta do a better job of editing and whatevering the photos I get of these adventures… I take a boatload… I get distracted… maybe we’ve met. Have I mentioned how over the fin fang foomin’ Moon I am to work next to these creatures?

Pizza Bird: the Legend Continues
Homegirl hopped on past again Saturday night right before we closed. Still too small to sputterball any further than a couple feet of technically-but-not-at-all-helpful-flight at a clip. Figured it was help the critter out or she’d get circle of lifed by something looking for a little after hours snackerel. She wasn’t super happy about me scooping her up again but Nila found us a gas station that sold bait worms and watched her while I made a nightcrawler run.

I’ve already messaged a nice wildlife rescue from Belmont county, they’re being exceptionally helpful, also my favorite and first Ornithologist, who’s been one of the greats since Nature Camp circa the 1980s

We’re working on hydration and some worm protein while we explore the sun porch and hang out a little.
