Sixty makers, one brief, and as many readings of what a collar could be. They hung at the height they’d be worn, turning on twine. @lelajacobs has been preoccupied with the collar in her own practice for years, and when she put the question out, the answers came back pinned, tucked, beaded, threaded, cut, embroidered, woven, and commerce nowhere in it.

She curated the show with the collective at @thekeep__, and I left wanting to know more, so caught up with Lela for an interview in the new issue of @homestylemag.

Collar comes to Ōtautahi this month as part of the @nzfashionwk Spring Fashion Festival. Can highly recommend nabbing a ticket… It’s even better in person.

Our beautiful COLLAR collaboration sold out during @nzfashionwk in Auckland.

We are delighted to share this celebration of making, materiality, and craftsmanship with Ōtautahi.

For one afternoon only, 60 makers from across Aotearoa come together in a collective exhibition responding to the collar as both object and adornment.

Suspended as a single installation, the collars become a portrait of contemporary making — revealing the richness of material exploration, technical skill, and creative expression across disciplines.

Presented during Ōtautahi’s Spring Fashion Festival.

Saturday 17 October
2pm — 5pm

COLLAR was shaped by many hands — artists, designers, stylists, performers, photographers, producers, friends and supporters — each bringing their own care, craft and generosity to the experience.

To everyone who helped create, build, document, style, light, scent, produce and share this event, thank you. And to everyone who purchased a ticket, joined us across the three sold-out shows, and supported the vision of COLLAR, thank you for making it possible.

A special acknowledgement to @thekeep__ , @nzfashionwk , and the extraordinary collective of people who brought this project to life alongside Lela Jacobs.

We feel incredibly grateful to have shared this moment with you.

COLLAR. One garment detail. Sixty creative interpretations.

Last week at HARDCORE, alongside New Zealand Fashion Week, COLLAR brought together 60 of Aotearoa’s leading designers, artists and makers to reimagine one of fashion’s most enduring forms.

Curated by Lela Jacobs of @thekeep__ , the exhibition transformed the humble collar into something altogether more extraordinary an object of art, craft, identity and imagination. Across weaving, jewellery, costume, fashion, textiles and contemporary craft, each maker responded to the collar through their own practice, creating 60 completely individual works.
