We have primary elections on Tuesday May 19, 2026.

I’m Shalela Dowdy and I am running for Alabama House of Representatives – District 97. ( Downtown Mobile, midtown, down the bay, the campground, the bottom, Maysville, DIP, Africatown, Chickasaw and a small portion of Saraland.

This campaign is about service, accountability, and making sure our communities have the representation that they deserve In the Alabama State House.

I’m running with a proven history of doing the work from serving in the United States Army (still serving,) to organizing and educating our community, to fighting for fair representation at the congressional level, expanding voter education, and standing up for people who are too often ignored by those in power. Service isn’t something I talk about it’s something I’ve lived.

I’m ready to do the work and earn your vote.

Happy Birthday to Mama Tina πŸ–€βœ¨
The matriarch. The blueprint. The moment. @mstinaknowles

I had the absolute honor of meeting her in May 2025, and I’ve been holding on to this gem of a picture ever since because moments like this matter. She was such a sweetheart, warm, gracious, and exactly who you’d expect the woman who raised Beyoncé to be.

This is Celestine Beyince, a.k.a. Tina Knowles-Lawson a phenomenal mother, visionary businesswoman, fashion designer, stylist, and hairstylist. A co-owner of CÉCRED , a creative force in her own right, and a true matriarch who has poured excellence, discipline, love, and purpose into everything she touches.

And yes she loves that we call her Mama Tina. πŸ₯Ή
Because how could we not love the woman who gave us the woman? Beyoncé didn’t come from nowhere she came from greatness.

So today we celebrate Mama Tina: for her brilliance, her beauty, her legacy, and for being a living reminder that behind powerful women are powerful mothers.

Forever grateful. Forever inspired.

πŸ—£οΈ It’s Voting Season

This is my Great Grandmother Lola. πŸ’• She’s 99 years old and she has officially VOTED! πŸ—³οΈ

I assisted my great-granny with requesting her absentee ballot, and once it arrived, she completed it and cast her vote from home.

Now I’m headed to the nursing home to help my grandfather do the same.

If you have an elder in your family who may not be able to physically make it to the polls, don’t assume somebody else is helping them. Be the somebody. Get them the form. Help them complete it. Take it to them if you need to. Help them navigate the process.

Alabama’s absentee voting process can be confusing for some and is unnecessarily complicated, so let’s make sure those extra steps don’t become a barrier for our elders. Especially with so many people not having immediate access to a printer.

Check on your elders in your family. Get them what they need. Help them get their ballot. And make sure they have the opportunity to vote. πŸ—³οΈβ€οΈ

Absentee request form that need to be printed out can be found at the link below.

Today I represented my Alma mater West Point - The U.S. Military Academy πŸ–€πŸ’›at the Mobile County Public School System College Fair. Right next to the West Point table was the Southern University table #Geaux Jags πŸ’›πŸ©΅

Sometimes life has a way of placing you exactly where you’re supposed to be right in front of you, in plain sight.

Today, I stood between two institutions that have shaped my journey in two very different, but equally meaningful, ways: my undergraduate alma mater, West Point, where I learned Duty, Honor, Country, and Southern University, where I’m earning my law degree and preparing to add β€œEsq.” to my name. βš–οΈπŸŽ“

And honestly… after all the obstacles, detours, frustrations, long nights, and moments when I’ve questioned the path I’m reminded that I am RIGHT where I’m supposed to be.

From one side of the table to the other, the journey makes sense. πŸ₯Ή

Here’s to the institutions that helped build me, the one helping me become who I’m meant to be, and the purpose that keeps pushing me forward.

West Point Γ— Southern University two chapters, one journey, and a whole lot more to come. πŸŽ“βš”οΈβš–οΈ by @lelav89

🚨 IT’S VOTING SEASON, ALABAMA! 🚨

The 2026 Midterm Election is November 3rd, and it’s time to get ready NOW. πŸ—³οΈ

College students if you’re away at school, request your absentee ballot or update your voter registration to your school address. Don’t let being away from home keep you from having your voice heard.

And let’s clear up this voter ID confusion: your photo ID does NOT have to have the same address as your voter registration. The purpose of the ID is to verify your identity. I’ve voted using my military ID and there’s no address on it. A U.S. passport doesn’t have an address either. They’re verifying YOU. Point blank.

And Alabama voters, pay attention: there are FOUR statewide constitutional amendments on this year’s ballot. Don’t just vote for the names you recognize know what you’re voting on.

So let’s get ready. Check your registration. Know your ballot. Make a plan. Get to the polls and take somebody with you.

November 3rd. We’re voting. πŸ—³οΈπŸ”₯

This is what the work looks like. πŸ—³οΈπŸ’™

As the 2nd Vice President of the @mobilealnaacp , I was honored to represent our organization as a sponsor of the Port City Classic and engage with students during the HBCU Summit.

We had the opportunity to talk with young people about the importance of voting and civic engagement even those who aren’t old enough to vote yet.

Because you may not be able to cast a ballot today, but you can still activate your household. πŸ“£

Tell your mama. Tell your daddy. Tell your grandparents. Tell your aunties and uncles. Tell your family members who are away at college. Make sure the people you love understand that showing up and voting matters.

Civic engagement starts before you ever step into a voting booth. It starts with education, conversations, and understanding that our voices have the power to shape our communities.

I’m grateful to be in a position where I can help educate, engage, and empower the next generation and I’m even more grateful for opportunities to remind our young people that they have a role in our democracy, too.

And listen… if you’ve been looking for a way to get more involved in our community, JOIN THE NAACP! πŸ‘€

If you’re interested in becoming a member or getting involved with the Mobile NAACP, hit me up! I’d love to connect you with our branch and help you find your place in the work.

We need YOU. Our communities need YOU. And there is plenty of work to do.

πŸ—³οΈ Vote November 3.
