Earlier this year, after missing the early namaz at my Jamatkhana, I ended up at the outdoor Eid prayer in Washington Square Park, my first in over six years of living in New York. Nervous to be attending alone, I brought my camera with me for company and left with some of my favorite photographs i’ve ever taken.

This past weekend, I had the chance to exhibit these photos alongside an incredibly talented group of photographers and filmmakers. It was such a joy to meet so many passionate, creative people and learn from their experiences❣️

Huge thanks to @cosydesiclub and @cinema.73 for curating this beautiful exhibition and allowing me to be a part of it!

If you’re interested in seeing more of my stuff - I’ve published my work in an online portfolio in my bio. Let’s take pictures together :)

In “Jaan”’, the filmmaker uses her mother’s forbidden cassettes and dance to tell the stories and show the spirit of Afghan women across generations.

With gratitude to the talented @2taildog and @atehliersu whose artistry on the posters helped capture the film’s visual identity. by @lenaaaxm

Here’s the trailer for my documentary, “Jaan”.

Through my mother’s tapes, my Afghan dance teacher, and my own journey, “Jaan” explores what it means to be an Afghan woman across generations.

For the women who taught me how to dance, speak, and remember.

With love and gratitude to everyone who made this film possible. by @lenaaaxm
