After twenty years in footwear design, @lencarella went looking for something more direct. He found clay.

For our latest Makers of Atmosphere, we spoke with the San Francisco-based ceramic artist about Japanese art, making every piece by hand, the uncertainty that keeps ceramics interesting, and the landscapes he returns to with his dog Renzo.

From functional objects to sculpture and site-specific work, Len’s practice is shaped by precision, patience and a willingness to let the material answer back.
