تشرفت مبادرة "لئلا ننسى" بالمشاركة في «البيت الإماراتي» ضمن جناح دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة في معرض بكين الدولي للكتاب. وقد ضمّ المعرض صوراً أرشيفية للأزياء التقليدية، ساهم بها أفراد من المجتمع في أرشيف المبادرة. كما رافقت هذه الصور روايات شفاهيّة مرتبطة بكل قطعة، تحكي قصصاً شخصية مؤثرة تُبرز الأهمية الثقافية للزينة واللباس التقليدي في التراث الإماراتي.

It was a distinct honor for Lest We Forget to participate in Al Bayt Al Emirati at the UAE Pavilion during the Beijing International Book Fair. The exhibition presented archival images of traditional garments, generously contributed by members of the community to the Lest We Forget Archive. Accompanying these images were oral histories linked to each garment—poignant personal narratives that underscore the cultural significance of adornment within Emirati heritage. taken in China by @lestweforgetuae

Lest We Forget use Studio 11 as their office and Studio 23 as their archival space. They are an innovative archival and research initiative that documents Emirati vernacular cultural memory and generates contemporary responses through the use of artistic language.

صُمّم ركن التصوير كتركيب فنّي يستحضر أجواء الاستوديوهات القديمة، ويبرز طبيعة الإمارات عبر لوحات لفنانات إماراتيات. وأضافت شيخة الطنيجي باباً تراثياً مستوحى من أبواب قصر الشيخ زايد في العين، في إشارة إلى الإرث المعماري للدولة.

احتفت الأعمال بإبداع المرأة الإماراتية وحضورها الثقافي، فيما نظّمت مبادرة «لئلا ننسى» ورشة تطريز «خيوط من الذاكرة» بالتعاون مع الفنانة عائشة المدحاني، حيث طُرِّزت صور من أرشيف المبادرة.

قُدّم ركن التصوير والورشة ضمن معرض «النيّرة» في بيت الحرفيين، تأكيداً على دور الفن في حفظ الذاكرة المجتمعية.

The Photo Booth installation transported visitors to an earlier era, celebrating the UAE’s landscapes through paintings by Emirati artists Manal bin Obood and Maryam Rashid Al Kaitoob. Artist Shaikha Al Teneiji added a traditional door design inspired by the palace doors of Sheikh Zayed in Al Ain, honoring the nation’s architectural heritage.

Together, the artworks highlighted the creativity and voices of Emirati women. Lest We Forget also hosted an embroidery workshop, “Threads of Memory,” where participants stitched onto archival photographs, blending memory with contemporary expression.

(البرقع) هو عمل فني يجمع 20 برقعاً من أصل 50 جمعتها الفنانة نورة المنصوري من مختلف إمارات الدولة. يركّز هذا العمل على إبراز أهمية برقع المرأة واستكشاف أبعاده الثقافية والاجتماعية والعملية في المجتمع الإماراتي. ويتضمّن ذكريات شفاهية روتها نساء من أبوظبي، تقدّم كلّ منها حكاية موجزة توثّق لحظة مؤثرة في حياتهن. ومن خلال هذا السرد الإنساني، يتجلّى البرقع بوصفه أكثر من قطعة للزينة؛ إذ يمثّل رمزاً قوياً للهوية والصمود، ويروي جانباً مهماً من قصة الوطن وذاكرته الجمعية.

عُرض العمل في مهرجان الحصن 2026، الذي أُقيم في قصر الحصن، بالتعاون مع (بيت الحرفيين)، ضمن معرض (خيوط من ذهب)

The “Burga” installation consists of 20 out of 50 Burgas collected by Artist Noura Almansoori from across the Emirates. The installation is designed to highlight the significance of the female Burga, exploring its cultural, social, and practical importance within Emirati society. Among the displayed Burgas were shared oral memories narrated by women from across Abu Dhabi, offering a brief anecdote that captures a significant moment in their lives. More than a piece of adornment, the Burga stands as a powerful symbol of identity and endurance, telling an important story of the country and its collective memory.

The Bisht installation is an immersive artwork that brings together archival imagery and oral memories shared by members of the community. Through these personal narratives and visual records, the installation highlights the continuing relevance of the male bisht as a powerful form of adornment and cultural expression.

The Story Behind the Story: Uncovering the National Pavilion UAE’s Hidden Legacy⁣

Building on the legacy of memory and place in design education.⁣
⁣
In 2020, Asma Bukhammas, Instructor at the @cace_zu at Zayed University Dubai and 2014 Venice intern alumna, led a design studio centered on Safa Park — a site rich with personal and collective memories. ⁣
⁣
Amid the challenges of early COVID and remote learning, the project invited students to reconnect emotionally with their surroundings by exploring the park’s ongoing redevelopment. Students were tasked with a speculative brief: imagine two structures—one original, one new—occupying the boundary between the old park and the new development. Would these buildings connect, clash, or blend? ⁣
⁣
This challenge encouraged critical reflection on preservation, erasure, and contested narratives of place, while students engaged in conversations with their families to activate memory as a research tool. This approach continues the thread from the 2014 National Pavilion UAE exhibition "Lest We Forget" — a practice grounded in lived experience, narrative, and public space that shapes how design is taught and imagined in the Gulf today.⁣

في عام 2020، قدّمت أسماء بخماس، مُحاضرة كلية الفنون والمشاريع الإبداعية بجامعة زايد في دبي وخريجة برنامج تدريب البندقية 2014، استوديو تصميم ركّز على حديقة الصفا بوصفها موقعًا غنيًا بالذكريات الشخصية والجماعية.⁣
⁣
في ظل جائحة كورونا والتعليم عن بُعد، دعا المشروع الطلاب إلى إعادة التواصل مع محيطهم من خلال استكشاف إعادة تطوير الحديقة. كُلِّف الطلاب بمهمة تصوّرية: تخيّلوا مبنيين، أحدهما أصلي والآخر جديد، عند الحد الفاصل بين الحديقة القديمة والتطوير الجديد. هل تتواصل المباني، أم تتصادم، أم تندمج؟⁣

شجّعت التجربة على التفكير النقدي في قضايا الحفظ والمحو وسرديات المكان، من خلال حوارات عائلية فُعِّلت فيها الذاكرة كأداة بحثية. ويعكس هذا النهج امتدادًا لمعرض الجناح الوطني لدولة الإمارات 2014 "لئلا ننسى"، كممارسة قائمة على التجربة والسرد والمكان العام، تسهم في تشكيل تعليم التصميم في الخليج اليوم.⁣

The Story Behind the Story: Uncovering the National Pavilion UAE’s Hidden Legacy

What began as a curatorial contribution in the 2014 National Pavilion UAE exhibition “Lest We Forget: Structures of Memory in the UAE” has grown into a major scholarly endeavor. Adina Hempel reflects on the timeline she developed for the National Pavilion UAE — and how it laid the groundwork for research still unfolding today:

“This work was eventually included in the final exhibition in Venice. As an urban and architectural researcher and professor at Zayed University, I later expanded on this research, detailing the timeline with a connected histories approach. The timeline now is expanded and includes important cultural and social developments associated with desert culture, architecture, and urbanism, and further details significant architectural movements and development in the UAE and the region. Today, this work is building the foundation for the development of the Zayed Institute of Architecture, Heritage and Arts knowledge platform and my additional scholarly research on the evolution of the built environment in the Arabian Peninsula.”

ما بدأ كمساهمة قيّمة في المعرض الذي قدّمه الجناح الوطني للإمارات عام 2014 بعنوان "لئلا ننسى: معالم خالدة في ذاكرة الإمارات"، تطوّر ليصبح مشروعاً بحثياً أكاديمياً واسع النطاق. تعود أدينا هِمبِل بالذاكرة إلى الخط الزمني الذي طوّرته للجناح الوطني للإمارات، وكيف شكّل أساساً لبحوث ما زالت تتكشف حتى اليوم:

"أُدرج هذا العمل في المعرض الختامي في البندقية. وبصفتي باحثة في العمارة والتخطيط الحضري وأستاذة في جامعة زايد، وسّعتُ لاحقًا هذا البحث، موثّقةً الخط الزمني بمنهجية التواريخ المترابطة. أصبح الخط الزمني اليوم أكثر شمولًا، إذ يضم تطورات ثقافية واجتماعية مرتبطة بثقافة الصحراء والعمارة والعمران، ويقدّم تفاصيل أوفى حول الحركات المعمارية البارزة ومسار التطور المعماري في دولة الإمارات والمنطقة. واليوم، يشكّل هذا العمل قاعدة أساسية لتطوير منصة المعرفة التابعة لكلية الفنون والصناعات الإبداعية بجامعة زايد، إلى جانب أبحاثي الأكاديمية المستمرة حول تطور البيئة المبنية في شبه الجزيرة العربية."

“Lest We Forget: Structures of Memory in the UAE”, curated by Dr. Michele Bambling for the National Pavilion UAE’s debut at the Venice Architecture Biennale, explored the country’s architectural and urban development over the past century.

A key element of the exhibition was a comprehensive timeline — researched and developed by 2014 curatorial research team — which placed significant moments in UAE modern architecture within a broader global economic and political context. Her work highlighted how, even as a young nation, the UAE was building landmark structures like the Dubai World Trade Centre, Abu Dhabi Bus Terminal, and Cultural Foundation — often in parallel with major global events, adding a new perspective on the pace and ambition of the country's urban growth.

Presented through maps, diagrams, and archival materials, the exhibition fostered dialogue between architects, planners, and citizens engaging with the UAE’s evolving built environment.

كان أحد العناصر الأساسية في المعرض الجدول الزمني الشامل، الذي بحثه وطوّره فريق البحث القيّمي لعام 2014، حيث وضع اللحظات البارزة في عمارة الإمارات الحديثة ضمن سياق اقتصادي وسياسي عالمي أوسع. وأظهر عملها كيف أن الإمارات، رغم حداثة عهدها، قامت ببناء مبانٍ رائدة مثل مركز دبي التجاري العالمي، ومحطة حافلات أبوظبي، والمجمع الثقافي، وذلك بالتوازي مع أحداث عالمية كبرى، ما أضاف منظورًا جديدًا لسرعة وطموح نمو الدولة العمراني.

The Story Behind the Story: Uncovering the National Pavilion UAE’s Hidden Legacy

“Lest We Forget” marked the beginning of the National Pavilion UAE’s journey at the International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.

Spearheaded by Dr. Michele Bambling, the project began in 2011 as a class project at Zayed University — inviting students to share family photographs and personal stories. What started in the classroom grew into a pioneering archival and curatorial initiative dedicated to preserving the UAE’s cultural memory.

By the end of 2014, Lest We Forget became a formal entity, expanding its impact through exhibitions, oral histories, publications, and landmark collaborations — from Expo 2020 to COP28. Its curatorial methodology, first developed for the UAE’s inaugural participation in Biennale Architettura, ‘Structures of Memory in the UAE’, laid the foundation for it’s practice today.

The Lets We Forget: Structures of Memory in the UAE traced the UAE’s urban development through forgotten places, personal narratives, and architectural memory — setting a precedent for the Pavilion’s now-signature, research-driven exhibitions.

بقيادة الدكتورة ميشيل بامبلينج، بدأ المشروع عام 2011 كنشاط صفّي في جامعة زايد، دُعي خلاله الطلاب لمشاركة صور عائلية وحكايات شخصية، وما انطلق من قاعة المحاضرات تحوّل لاحقًا إلى مبادرة رائدة في الأرشفة وتنظيم المعارض مكرّسة لحفظ الذاكرة الثقافية للإمارات.

وبحلول نهاية عام 2014، أصبح "لئلا ننسى" كيانًا مؤسسيًا مستقلًا، ووسع أثره عبر المعارض، والتاريخ الشفهي، والمنشورات، والتعاونات البارزة من إكسبو 2020 إلى مؤتمر الأطراف(COP28)، لقد أرست منهجيته القيّمة في التنظيم، التي طُوِّرت لأول مشاركة للإمارات في بينالي العمارة بعنوان "معالم خالدة في ذاكرة الإمارات"، الأساس لممارساته الحالية.
