We are calling for the Scottish Government to decriminalisation abortion and reform the Abortion Act 1967. Currently in Scotland, abortion is treated differently from other forms of crucial healthcare under the law, without medical justification. We must urgently eradicate this stigma; there is no place for it in modern Scotland. Prosecutions for abortion offences have occurred in Scotland in recent years. We need to future-proof now, against an increase in unnecessary prosecutions, as has been seen in England.

Routine polling demonstrates overwhelming support in Scotland for women themselves to have control over their decision to have an abortion. 83-97% agree that ‘women should have the right to an abortion’, and yet we continue to be faced with an outdated, harmful system which is out of step with human rights standards. We need change now. Time’s up for outdated abortion law.

Is abortion criminalised in Scotland?

We hit the streets and asked folk what they thought.

‘There’s probably some archaic law that criminalises it…’. YES.

In the face of rising challenges to women’s rights in Scotland, it is essential that we safeguard women’s heath by modernising abortion law in line with modern healthcare standards.

The manosphere, reform, the far right on the rise.. now’s the time to take a stand.

Times UP for outdated abortion law.

New on the GWL Blog: Let’s Change the Act: Running Out Of Time

What can an archive tell us about the fight for reproductive rights - and what does it mean to encounter that history alongside the next generation?

In this newly published piece, author Chitra Ramaswamy explores abortion campaign materials from Glasgow Women’s Library’s Collections, reflecting on the women who campaigned, protested, listened and wrote things down - and the histories that might otherwise have been lost.

Co-commissioned by Glasgow Women’s Library and Let’s Change the Act, the piece connects the stories held in the archive with the ongoing campaign for the full decriminalisation of abortion and a modern, health-based framework for abortion care.

“So much of women’s history will never be known. It goes with us. Cannot be summoned back. We are always running out of time.”

Fantastic to see national coverage in The Herald this week of our #EuropeForAbortionRights green illuminations marking International Safe Abortion Day across Europe.

Including our very own EICC in Edinburgh, illuminations shone in over ten European cities, including Geneva, Paris, Brussels, Barcelona and more.

“The law is in urgent need of modernisation in Scotland, and with widespread public support, this is a crucial moment for us to reflect and raise awareness of our campaign to replace the hugely outdated 1967 Abortion Act in Scotland... Women should simply have the power to say ‘I don’t want to be pregnant’... Time’s up for outdated abortion law.”

Last night we joined over ten European countries marking International Safe Abortion Day by supporting the Europe for Abortion Rights campaign, lighting national landmarks and institutions green, the colour of International Safe Abortion Day (ISAD).

Together, we make a global call for access to timely, affordable, and quality abortion care. ISAD is also a crucial moment to highlight the harms caused by restrictive abortion laws and barriers to care. We continue to urge the Scottish Government to protect and advance reproductive rights as human rights, here in Scotland. The Abortion Act of 1967 is hugely outdated and must be replaced. We must decirminalise abortion in Scotland.

Huge thanks to The Edinburgh International Conference Centre for supporting reproductive rights and lighting up green this evening.

Illuminations can be seen Barcelona, Brussels, Dublin, Geneva, Paris, Yerevan and more. #EuropeForAbortionRights #letschangetheact #abortion #scotland #reproductiverights by @letschangetheact

Something exciting is happening this Monday...

Landmarks and public buildings across European cities will be illuminated this Monday the 28th of September to mark International Safe Abortion Day, as part of a coordinated show of support for abortion rights by over ten European cities.

As part of that effort, we have organised two Scottish illuminations, The Edinburgh City Chambers and The Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

They will be lit green, the colour of International Safe Abortion Day, so look out for the lights and tag us in any pictures you take!

You are also invited to take a picture wearing green and tag or send to us on Instagram to show your support!

We spoke exclusively with @theheraldscotland about decriminalising abortion. The current system is outdated and endangers women. We need urgent action to bring Scotland in line with international health and human rights standards.

Scotland is now the only part of the UK that has not decriminalised abortion.

Scotland has had the power to reform its own abortion laws for a decade, and the Scottish Government’s own independently commissioned expert group has recommended that they should do so.

Ending criminalisation, and repealing the old 1967 Abortion act and replacing it with modernised legislation, would be a step towards giving women in Scotland the best possible reproductive rights.

We're disappointed to see no commitments to reforming abortion law in the coming year this week in the parliament.

It’s unacceptable that Scotland is now the only place in the UK where women and pregnant people can be criminalised for ending a pregnancy. For too long, women in Scotland have had to settle for a system of abortion law that doesn’t put their needs, health and rights first.

We were also surprised that the Government's five-year Programme for Government released this week does not include commitments to modernise our badly outdated abortion laws and to safeguard women’s reproductive rights. The Abortion Law Review Expert Group spent a year compiling the evidence base for reform – we need action now to bring Scotland in line with international health and human rights standards and create an abortion framework that's in sync with the realities of modern healthcare and prevents harmful police investigations and prosecutions.

We need your help to persuade political leaders in Scotland to take action to modernise abortion law:

The Abortion Act is nearly nearly 60 years old, and is still used to control whether a woman can have an abortion or not.

Our mothers and grandmothers had to abide by this law and today, in Scotland , so do we. That’s generations of women denied control of their own bodies. Time’s up for outdated abortion law.

We need a modern abortion framework, reflecting modern healthcare.

We need to stop unnecessary police investigations and prosecutions.

Please like and share so that we can protect ourselves and our daughters from restrictions on their healthcare and their human rights.

If you agree that every woman has the right to autonomy, join our campaign to modernise abortion law in Scotland. Sign up at the link in our bio.

We’re still reeling that this happened.

You may remember we filmed in Glasgow at the end of last year, chatting to the public about reproductive rights and the need to decriminalise abortion in Scotland and replace the outdated Abortion Act of 1967. We had a great day speaking to lots of folk and hearing their opinions and thoughts on reproductive rights. You can watch those videos back on our page.

But... we were asked to be silent.

It’s 2025, we’re in Glasgow, talking about reproductive rights and we were asked to stop. We were asked to stop having conversations about essential healthcare for women. Oh, how history repeats itself.

When we say stigma around abortion healthcare still exists in Scotland - this is what we mean. Abortion is treated differently under the law than other forms of comparable healthcare, without medical justification. This is despite being one of the most routinely used and safe forms of healthcare – accessed by around one in three women in their lifetimes - and repeat polling shows that between 83 and 97% agree women should have the right to an abortion.
