We’re overjoyed to be announcing this year’s Radical Book Fair Saturday night extravaganza - The Joy is With Us: A Queer Resistance Cabaret!

Join us for an evening of performances and discussion celebrating joy and queer resistance. A glorious line up of queer talent will explore the role of queer and feminist spaces in the struggle not only against queer oppression, but against racism, Islamophobia, ableism and xenophobia.

Through music, poetry, conversation and performance, we celebrate this work as part of our communities, and reflect on the work that needs more resources and energy.

Come be thrilled, entertained and galvanised where art meets resistance! Saturday 7th November at 7.30PM - see you there. Artemis, a white stringy dog, looks at the camera as she wears a trans flag and sits on a bisexual flag. On the left of the photo is an image of the Queer Resistance Cabaret event. At the top, text reads "Edinburgh's Radical Book Fair."

Last night we rallied outside The Scottish Parliament to stand against Islamophobia and Racism. Yesterday MSP Thomas Kerr brought forth a Reform UK motion to ‘debate’, ‘the wearing of full face coverings, including the burqa and niqab...’ and to note ‘the potential benefits of introducing further restrictions’. We joined Feminists, partners and sister organisations including @aminamwrc @sistersagainstcuts @scottishtuc, and @womenagainstfarrightscotland , who organised the demo.

Our partners at Sisters Against Cuts said, ‘A ban on what Muslim women wear does nothing for women’s safety. It only isolates women further. Thomas Kerr wants to pretend he’s tackling fear while Glasgow’s women’s specialist, mental health, drugs services and housing are on their knees.’

Alongside MSPs, we heard from powerful speakers before heading in for the debate. Strong objections were heard across the chamber and when the Presiding Officer called to extend the debate, MSPs refused, in a parliamentary first.

There is NO place for Islamophobia and Racism in Scotland.

New on the GWL Blog: Let’s Change the Act: Running Out Of Time

What can an archive tell us about the fight for reproductive rights - and what does it mean to encounter that history alongside the next generation?

In this newly published piece, author Chitra Ramaswamy explores abortion campaign materials from Glasgow Women’s Library’s Collections, reflecting on the women who campaigned, protested, listened and wrote things down - and the histories that might otherwise have been lost.

Co-commissioned by Glasgow Women’s Library and Let’s Change the Act, the piece connects the stories held in the archive with the ongoing campaign for the full decriminalisation of abortion and a modern, health-based framework for abortion care.

“So much of women’s history will never be known. It goes with us. Cannot be summoned back. We are always running out of time.”

📣It’s beyond time for Scotland’s abortion law to catch up with the reality of modern healthcare and the rights of those it exists to serve.

Lawmanity supports Let’s Change the Act (@letschangetheact), Scotland’s national campaign to decriminalise abortion and replace the Abortion Act 1967.

In our latest blogpost, Amanda Amaeshi (@amandaamaeshii) explores why Scotland needs a legal framework that reflects contemporary healthcare practice, human rights standards, and the fundamental right to bodily autonomy.

First we had Postcards for Palestine, next we have Postcards for Abortion Rights!

For too long women in Scotland have had to settle for a system of abortion law that doesn’t put their needs, health and rights first. We deserve a modern abortion framework that is in sync with the realities of modern healthcare, upholds human rights for all those that need abortion and prevents harmful police investigations and prosecutions.

We are hosting a second creative/ collage session around abortion rights, this time in the bookshop garden, hosted by Mika Morava!

Come write a postcard or craft your own unique cards to send to Parliamentary candidates and Scottish political parties, in support of decriminalising abortion in Scotland.

You can simply write a letter in company, collage a card with some information from the @letschangetheact campaign, craft a piece of art inspired by thoughts of bodily autonomy, and feminist activism - it’s really up to you.

No artistic skill or knowledge needed, just a willingness to add your voice or your story to efforts to change the act - we’ll help with the rest.

This Sunday 31st May, 10.30-12pm - get your tickets from our website! A pink and orange poster background that reads Sun 31st May 10.30 a.m. – 12pm (drop-ins welcome) then reads postcards for abortion rights and underneath let’s change the act, a casual creative/collage/writing session. There is a background image of two postcards and to the left a pink loudspeaker.

📣 FEMINIST EVENT 📣

It's time to take a deep dive into feminist history as we meet Shere Hite— whose notorious work revolutionized how we think about s3x, marriage, and the female orga$m.

Tomorrow evening (13 May), historian of global feminism Rosa Campbell will be with us to guide us through the life, work, controversies and oppression surrounding a forgotten but leading figure of second-wave feminism.

Gearing up for the event, we headed for the shelves to gather up some stand-out books tackling the relationship between sex, pleasure and power, ending up with a stack that includes recent classics on s3x work as well as gems on s3x and disability.

You can find more info on the books and buy your tickets for tomorrow's event on our website, link in bio!

The event will be followed by a social in collaboration with @letschangetheact - come join us 🔥 A pile of feminist books scattered on a wooden floor, among The Book That Taught the World to Orgasm and Then Disappeared: Shere Hite and the Hite Report, Second Skin, Tomorrow Sex Will Be Good Again, How to Have Feminist Sex, Dream Lovers and Revolting Pr*stitutes.

With one week to go until the Scottish Election on the 7th of May, we’ve been delving into the major party manifestos to see whose saying what on key issues for women in Scotland.

We’ve used our own manifesto, ‘Investing in Women, Transforming Communities’, which makes ten vital calls for women’s equality, as a guide when reviewing party manifestos.

Headlines,

➡️We see commitments from Scottish Green, Scottish Liberal Democrats and the SNP for abortion law reform, as our campaign @letschangetheact has been calling for.

➡️ Varied commitments from nearly all parties on women’s health.

➡️ Poor cross party commitment to women’s social security investment.

➡️ No party has made a specific commitment to our call to commission a third phase of the National Advisory Council on Women and Girls and fully implement the Council’s recommendations to date.

Find our manifesto ‘Investing in Women, Transforming Communities’, via our link in bio.

We’ve included all relevant content from party manifestos, regardless of our view on whether it would have a positive or negative impact on women’s lives.
