Caribou. Mackenzie Mountains. Horseback.

I'm struggling for words that can express the true feelings of a trip that challenged us, inspired us, and rewarded us.

Gratitude is likely the closest word to related my feelings towards the place, guides, and outfitter for an incredible experience.

Dad and I were both fortunate to tag out on Caribou in spots we both hoped to get them. His down low, and mine up on the skyline.

They'd been after one stag for two days. They called him MJ.

Both days, he wasn't where they'd pinned him down.

Heading back toward the lodge, James glanced over his shoulder and saw a trail of dust, about fifteen hundred yards up the hill.

It was MJ, leading a group of young stags.

Then he turned and started fighting one of them.

Then their antlers locked.

Outfitter Spotlight: James Pinfold of South Pacific Safaris, New Zealand.

James grew up rural, just east of Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island. He was out after rabbits with a .22 at seven or eight, with his dad, his brothers and his dad's friends.

He was nine when he shot his first deer, out with his stepfather. A red deer hind, taken at last light on the walk back to the truck.

He spent most of his teens and early twenties rodeoing. He also spent time in Canada, the States and Australia.

Back home and working construction, he wanted to get back in the hills. When his girlfriend's parents bought a hunting operation, he came to help them through their first season.

Years later, he's still there.

Today South Pacific Safaris hunts red stag, fallow deer and Arapawa rams north of Christchurch, with tahr and chamois further south. It's a family operation. His wife is the chef through the season, his brother-in-law Dan guides, and head guide Hayden has been with the business so long James says he might as well be family.

"The trophy, in my eyes, is just a token of the memories."

James Pinfold was guiding one hunter. Another guide had the second.

They'd split up, and the second rifle ran out of ammo.

The spare rounds were with James, back at the side by side.

So was a little drone, still packed from an earlier hunt they'd been filming.

He tied the ammo to the bottom of it and flew it over.

Within reason, James says, you've got to push to the wire now and then. Otherwise you're not getting the most out of your hunting.

Hunt's done, tags are filled, and there's a remote lake full of Arctic Grayling and Lake Trout just sitting there. Fishing up at Iron North Outfitters in the Yukon was the perfect way to end the trip. 🎣
