Raising healthy girls through puberty & beyond
Evidence-based guidance from a PA + girl mom
Nutrition • hormones • periods • healthier products
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Hi! 👋 I started this account because I believe girls (and their moms) deserve more support through puberty.

Most of us know the basics: expect a period, grab some products, and brace for the mood swings. 😅

But puberty is so much more than periods.

It’s a season of incredible growth for our daughters’ brains, bones, hormones, emotional health, and relationship with their changing bodies.

As a Physician Assistant and mom, I wanted to better understand what’s really happening during these years—and how we can help our girls feel healthy, confident, and prepared along the way. And actually enjoy this season!

Here, we’ll talk about puberty, periods, nutrition, hormones, healthier products, and everyday choices that can support our daughters’ health.

Just evidence-based information, practical ideas, honest conversations, and moms learning how to support our girls well.

Because puberty shouldn’t be something we simply “get through.” I believe it can be a season our daughters enter feeling informed and supported.

I’m so glad you’re here. 🤍 by @letsraisewell

Lip gloss may be the first makeup products she asks for. Let’s make sure we feel good about what’s in it. 🤍

I’ve spent time reviewing ingredients, messaging companies, and reading reviews to find lip glosses and balms that meet my standards for cleaner products and that she will actually love.

There are plenty of good options out there and this is certainly not all inclusive, but these are some that made my list.

I’m selective because it’s not just her lip gloss. It’s her skincare, makeup, hair products, food, clothes, and all the little exposures throughout her day.

Would you be interested in the ones that didn’t make my list and why they didn’t?

PMS may be common, but doesn’t have to be normal.

Research has linked higher ultra-processed food intake with more severe symptoms, including fatigue, irritability, anxiety, and pain.

Encouraging real, nourishing foods is a great place to start: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, quality protein and healthy fats.

Not perfection. NOT restriction. Just teaching our daughters that what they fuel their bodies with can influence how they feel throughout their cycle. by @letsraisewell

This isn’t about fear. It’s about making sure girls understand what these medications do, the potential risks, and whether the cause of her symptoms has been explored.

As a physician assistant and mom, I believe our daughters deserve informed consent, not just a quick prescription. by @letsraisewell

Period products I’d feel good giving my daughters 🩸
I look for:
• 100% organic cotton
 • Fragrance-free
 • Dye-free
 • Transparent ingredients
These are not all “perfect” but they are all better choice options and there are several other brands on the market that are good choices.
Many conventional brands use fragrance, plastics, and non organic cotton, which is often heavily sprayed with glyphosate.
I personally only use a menstrual cup for the last several years, so I have not tried all of these, but these recommendations are based on product ingredients, user reviews, accessibility, company transparency, and other factors.
Some women also report fewer cramps and menstrual symptoms after switching to cleaner products. That connection hasn’t been proven in studies, but these experiences deserved to be heard and researched.
These products sit against sensitive, absorbent tissue for hours. For me, choosing simpler materials is an easy swap worth making.
Have you noticed a difference after switching? I would love to hear what brands/products you trust? by @letsraisewell

Puberty is not one awkward conversation or a period preparation weekend.

It is an entire season of development that may begin sooner and last longer than many parents realize.

The takeaway is not fear. It is awareness.

We cannot control exactly when puberty begins, but we can support healthy growth, reduce avoidable exposures, and prepare our daughters before the changes arrive.

Control the controllables.
Understand what is coming.
Help her enter this stage informed, confident, and supported. by @letsraisewell

Body odor can be one of the first signs of adrenarche—when the adrenal glands begin producing more androgens which can contribute to body odor.
It can happen before the more obvious signs of puberty and does not necessarily mean her period is coming soon. But it may mean it’s time to add deodorant to her hygiene routine.
Make sure she’s prepared with products that support her health.
I’m tagging a few of my favorite deodorant options for growing girls below. ↓

A sweet, age-appropriate way to begin talking about periods before her first one arrives. ❤️

Wonderfully Made: Period. explains what to expect in a positive light without making periods feel scary, embarrassing or gross.

Because apparently telling my daughter my menstrual cup was a “facial cup” when she asked, wasn’t my best girl mom move. 😂

Definitely one to add to your daughter’s bookshelf! by @letsraisewell

Thankfully, we’ve come a long way since we were growing up. There are so many better options for cleaner products for our daughters now.
Progress over perfection, but small changes add up. 🩷 I’ll share some of my favorite clean swaps and what to look on labels to help you shop with peace of mind later this week. by @letsraisewell

Some stats 🤯🤯🤯
⭐️More than 3 hours a day on social media is associated with twice the risk of depression and anxiety symptoms.
⭐️46% of teens say social media makes them feel worse about their bodies.
⭐️Among teen girls, 50% say social media has negatively affected their sleep, 25% their mental health and 20% their confidence.
I’m not here to decide when social media is right for your child.
I just want moms to understand the data we have about its impact on teenagers so they can make informed decisions for their own families and raise healthy, confident girls. ❤️ by @letsraisewell

Growing up on Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch was fun—but apparently a bowl of marshmallows and sugar wasn’t designed to keep us full until lunch. 😂

Protein + fiber + healthy fat at breakfast helps kids stay full, maintain steadier energy, and support their mood and focus throughout the morning.

And as girls approach puberty, those everyday nutrition habits become even more important. Their bodies are rapidly growing, building bone and muscle, and navigating changes in hormones. Consistent, balanced meals help provide the fuel and nutrients they need through puberty and beyond.

These waffles have protein, fiber and healthy fat baked right in. Prep them once, and breakfast is ready all week. Pair them with eggs, sausage, or fruit for some added protein and fiber. 🧇
