I’m going to be in a book! I created this piece for Letter It Out: Volume 3. The prompt was: WHEN YOUR INSECURITY IS EATING YOU UP, WHAT WOULD YOU NEED TO HEAR FROM SOMEONE OR YOURSELF?

I’ve known about this since December, but I didn’t start on it until a week before the deadline. Simply because I have a lot of insecurities. I came up with several ideas and couldn’t decide what to submit.

As is my way, I finally thought myself into an answer!

At the root of every idea I had was the feeling of never being good enough. Oh boy. We’re heading to vulnerability corner. Apologies.

As it turns out, being told, asked, and expected to change who you are can mess you up for life.

“Why don’t you talk?”
“Why can’t you be friendlier?”
“You should be more outgoing like ______!”

So, all I heard was:

Something is wrong with you.
You need to change.
You need to be better!

And I took that personally.

Eventually, I realized there is nothing wrong about the way I was created. I’m supposed to be just as I am. My existence is intentional! Eventually, I realized there is nothing wrong about the way I was created. I’m supposed to be just as I am. My existence is intentional!

Most of the “bad things” I do, is about trying to prove that I’m good enough. To everyone else and myself, I suppose.

I am my biggest critic.
My work needs to be better.
I strive for perfection and I will keep working on things for much longer than necessary, because I can’t be caught slipping.
I CANNOT stop working. I have to be moving constantly, because if I’m not working, I’m not trying hard enough.
If I’m not trying, everything will fall apart and it will be all my fault!
Whheeeeeeeee!
WHAT FUN!!!!!

Yes, I am a grown adult at the big age of 42. I’m never going to “fix” this. I will deal with it for the rest of my life. I know that. I’m fine with it. Next time it comes up, maybe this will help. taken in Sulphur, Louisiana by @letteritout_book

With summer coming to a close and with some much needed time for reflection, I’ve been thinking about the past 3 years of The Letter it Out project and all the sweet memories and learning experiences that came with it.

The idea for this project actually started back in 2018, when I first fell in love with hand lettering and began getting excited to be an artist. I tried to get it off the ground then, but it wasn’t the right time. In 2024 it popped back up and we were able to gather 10 artists to collaborate on the first volume!

From the beginning, the heart behind Letter it Out has been to celebrate local lettering and calligraphy artists while sharing their stories on how they work through certain struggles or insecurities. I’ve always been fascinated by psychology, personal growth, and well-being (in another life, I would’ve loved working in therapy or research), and I know I was made to hand letter. Being able to combine those two passions has truly been a dream.

I never cared if this got big because it was a passion project. I was just happy to have artists to collaborate with and share their stories and art. I’m so honored and grateful for every single artist that has been involved in this project as well as all the people in the community that have supported. You guys are the best! 💓

Leading this project also stretched me in ways I never expected. I was honestly so nervous about leading a group and wanted so badly to do a good job. There were moments that challenged me, moments that made me want to cry tears of joy, and some hard lessons along the way. I’m grateful for all of it because those experiences have challenged me to look inward and go through some tough and fruitful seasons of growth and shaped me into a better artist and person.

More than anything, I hope Letter it Out helped someone feel seen and heard. I hope it reminded someone that we’re all imperfect humans, that growth is possible, and there is so much beauty in creating and sharing our stories.

Thank you to every artist, every reader, every supporter, and every person who believed in this little passion project. It means more than you’ll ever know. 💓 by @letteritout_book

Letter It Out Volume 3

What a beautiful crew. I’m so honored to have collaborated with such an amazing, thoughtful, talented, and skilled group of artists. We began planning Volume 3 back in January, and seeing everything come together at the release party this past Friday filled me with so much joy.

I honestly wasn’t sure how many people would come out because the weather wasn’t looking great, but once the rain settled, so many people showed up to support. It truly blew me away.

Thank you to all of the artists, to the family and friends who continue to support us, and to everyone who has poured love into this project from the beginning. Words really can’t express how grateful I am for each and every one of you.

A special thank you to Dorcas @dorcasbr and The Red Shoes @theredshoesbr for always showing love for this project since Volume 1 and for all of your continued support. And thank you to Keidrick and Elle of @ellemnop.art for collaborating with LIO. Keidrick, the grid display you put together made such an impact and it was so cool to see everyone’s work at one time. 💓

You can still purchase books at locations and online. All profits go to the amazing programs at The Red Shoes, that directly impact our community.
