💥We are thrilled to announce the next chapter in Let There Be Neon’s long and glorious history. 💥
Yesterday, Lynn and Dave Waller became the new owners of LTBN.
Their wonderful shop in Boston, @neon_williams is a perfect fit for Let There Be Neon in New York.
Jeff Friedman, who started with Rudi Stern in 1977, is officially retiring from neon. The spirit of Rudi Stern and his legacy carries on.

@this_is_the_real_mike_meyer is one of the country’s foremost itinerant sign painters, and he’s on the road a lot, a one man traveling band/instructional moving in real time.
To participate in one of his workshops is to hear him preach the techniques of letter making, proportions, and paint, but you are also going to witness him deftly weave bits and bobs of accumulated information about Americana in between the brushstrokes: Why the midwest is the really interesting part of America, the social structure of barbershops, where to buy cigars in New Zealand, and why sign painters often make spelling errors (answer: they aren’t thinking about spelling at all, or ‘To see is to forget the name of the thing one sees’)

Bonus round on how to letter a stock car door and the beauty of watching the paint job get destroyed on the track.
Huge thanks to Mike for dropping by NYC last week, and to Dave @neon_williams and the whole Let There Be Neon crew for letting the magic happen on the @lettherebeneon loading dock taken in Let There Be Neon by @lettherebeneon

To mark the upcoming launch of my book, SAYING NO TO NEW, I’m asking people to answer a single question:

“What is one old thing that you cherish?”

First up is Molly Rae, of “Let There Be Neon,” a neon sign business in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Watch for the vivid colors, old school signs, and fire-powered glass bending.

📕SAYING NO TO NEW hits bookstores on Sept. 15. Comment BOOK to learn more about it.

Kibitzing at Russ & Daughters with Jeff Friedman, former owner of Let There Be Neon. ✨

For decades, Let There Be Neon has cared for the iconic sign at our original shop and created the neon signs at our other locations. Hear the stories behind the glow.

We all recognize the warm glow of neon from the signs that adorn our city’s theaters, stores, and art galleries but where does it come from and how is it made? One workshop in Brooklyn has been creating this illuminated art for more than 50 years. @donnahanover shines a light on these neon-inspired artists at @lettherebeneon by @lettherebeneon

“John Hitchcock: We are Defined by the Beat” is now open @nbmaa56 MAY 16, 2026 - NOVEMBER 29, 2026. Curated by @lisa.at.lisa

For over three decades, John Hitchcock has transformed the sonic and cultural rhythms of his homeland into a distinct visual language. An enrolled member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma with Comanche and Northern European ancestry, Hitchcock merges personal expression with references to intertribal powwows, the Wichita Mountain landscape of his youth, and the symbols and languages of Great Plains Native peoples. Working across printmaking, neon, textiles, sound, and video, he merges traditional and contemporary art forms to pay homage to his ancestors, confront histories of Indigenous displacement and trauma, and celebrate community, resilience, and survival.

“John Hitchcock: We are Defined by the Beat” is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts with additional support provided by the Roberts Foundation for the Arts, Susan and John Alston, and Claudia I. Thesing. Song: Get Ready {featuring Marla Nauni and Peggy Pohosucut Reid). by @lettherebeneon
