@this_is_the_real_mike_meyer is one of the country’s foremost itinerant sign painters, and he’s on the road a lot, a one man traveling band/instructional moving in real time.
To participate in one of his workshops is to hear him preach the techniques of letter making, proportions, and paint, but you are also going to witness him deftly weave bits and bobs of accumulated information about Americana in between the brushstrokes: Why the midwest is the really interesting part of America, the social structure of barbershops, where to buy cigars in New Zealand, and why sign painters often make spelling errors (answer: they aren’t thinking about spelling at all, or ‘To see is to forget the name of the thing one sees’)

Bonus round on how to letter a stock car door and the beauty of watching the paint job get destroyed on the track.
Huge thanks to Mike for dropping by NYC last week, and to Dave @neon_williams and the whole Let There Be Neon crew for letting the magic happen on the @lettherebeneon loading dock

My screen time went down 80% this week.

I finally fulfilled a longtime dream: learning sign painting with the godfather of American sign painting, @this_is_the_real_mike_meyer in New York.

What a pleasure to get back to craft.

Mike is the sweetest mentor, full of wisdom, stories, and incredible archives. And sharing this love for letters with so many other curious minds is a bless.

As a graphic designer, I’m often asked about my perspective on AI. I’ve never been against it. Quite the opposite. It has opened up possibilities I couldn’t have imagined a few years ago, and made creative tools accessible to more people than ever. I think that’s a beautiful thing.

But the more technology evolves, the more I find myself appreciating what happens away from it.

Because having more tools doesn’t necessarily mean having better ideas. And making something faster doesn’t always mean making it better.

Taste takes time to develop. Craft takes time to master. Both require curiosity, patience, mistakes and lots of love.

I have no idea what graphic design will look like in ten years, but whatever happens, letters will forever be treated with love.

To mark the upcoming launch of my book, SAYING NO TO NEW, I’m asking people to answer a single question:

“What is one old thing that you cherish?”

First up is Molly Rae, of “Let There Be Neon,” a neon sign business in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Watch for the vivid colors, old school signs, and fire-powered glass bending.

📕SAYING NO TO NEW hits bookstores on Sept. 15. Comment BOOK to learn more about it.
