Postcard from Sri Lanka! 🇱🇰

Month here is done, and now off to a new country.

About Sri Lanka: I have never witnessed nature this breathtaking. And not the kind you have to go looking for. Wildlife is just everywhere. Around the accommodation, by the roads, in the trees, it feels like living inside a nature documentary.

We spent a couple of weeks driving our own tuk-tuk, packed with dog and cat food, making our way from the coast into central parts of the country completely on our own schedule. Stopping to feed furry friends we met along the way. Swimming when we felt like it. Pulling over whenever something looked interesting. That kind of freedom and slow travel that actually lets a place sink in.

We stayed in small homestays with local families, which added a whole different glow to the experience.

But… at the same time, the country didn’t leave us with the feeling that we would want to come back anytime soon. And the reason is the stray animal situation. It’s so extreme. Especially dogs; many are treated very poorly. I’ve travelled a lot and seen a lot, but I have never witnessed anything like this. It leaves a very big minus to this country.

The solution is pretty simple: large-scale sterilisation, medical care, and long-term animal welfare work. And yes, context matters ofc. Sri Lanka was colonised for over 400 years before gaining independence, shaped by multiple empires and long structural challenges that don’t disappear overnight. On top of that, the country is currently facing a severe economic crisis, made even worse by recent floods and landslides. Debt levels are high, resources are limited and recovery takes time.

But responsibility still matters. And this is where we tourists come in.

Travel isn’t just about “using” a country — it’s about being part of it. If we benefit from the beauty, the hospitality, and the experiences a country gives us, we can also choose to give something back where it’s truly needed. Supporting responsible organisations working with street animals or other local causes, donating if we can, or volunteering our time on the ground — small actions, but real, concrete impact.

3 months in Greece - done! Our time in the land of olives, endless sunshine, and dramatic mountain goats has come to an end, and we are slowly rolling north again.

Greece was, once again, magnificent, beautiful, inspiring… and at times a little tough (all the street animals who broke our hearts daily).

Team @rollingwithmargaret & @dis.aster.van ran like a well-oiled, slightly sandy machine. And yes, tiny but mighty Napoleon, who went with a codename Habanero on our daily walkie-talkie conversations, somehow became the unofficial star of the trip, judging by the absurd number of photos of her in my camera roll.

Now up to new roads and adventures and maybe a little less feta.
