Soft Cinema II is a software system for making films. The artist supplies the media and defines general rules, and the software assembles a film in real time. The system was designed by Lev Manovich and coded with Claude. It has more than a hundred parameters, which allows making variety of films using different editing principles, types of media, and screen layouts.

The first film made with the system is illustrated here. I wrote the narrative and shot most of the video. Every run tells the same voice-over story, but the visuals and their layout on the screen change each time.

The project suggests an alternative to both traditional and AI-based cinema. Traditionally, a film was fully made by its human team and released in a single version. Today, AI is often used to generate some film materials or even a full film — but it still exists as a single version.

In contrast, Soft Cinema II explores “variable cinema”: films that can exist in numerous versions, assembled in real time by software. In contrast to opaque AI models, this software is transparent because every decision follows explicit rules and parameters that can be read and changed. taken in Barcelona, Spain by @levmanovich

Help me choose which of these images I should use from now on in my social media profiles, lecture posters, and my website.

I have been playing with the new ChatGPT image version 2, and i think it’s a big step forward. Here are some of the edits of my iPhone selfie photo, which I've done in one chat session. The model preserves likeness, geometry, and face details from edit to edit, unlike previous models. Maybe there are some tiny changes, but it's hard for me to say.

Pleasing, Compliant, Infinite: AI as a Visual Artistic Medium

Pleasing, Compliant, Infinite: AI as a Visual Artistic Medium

October 16, 15:00
@cafesjiancenter, Special Events Auditorium

Drawing on his new book in progress and his own creative practice, Lev Manovich explored generative AI as a visual artistic medium, comparing it with other forms of artistic expression.

The lecture examined three key questions: how AI’s aesthetic preferences challenge the principles of the avant-garde, how generative technologies redefine chance and artistic control, and what happens to individual style and creative identity when thousands of visual styles become available through a single prompt.

Does “digital art” still describe one artistic world?

Artists can use the same technologies and still belong to completely different worlds — with their own audiences, institutions and ideas of what makes art valuable.
For the first CIFRA Open Classroom, we’re bringing together Lev Manovich and José Ramón Alcalá for a conversation about these worlds, how they’ve changed and what it means to find your place among them.
This isn’t a traditional lecture. We’re opening up a university classroom in Cuenca, Spain to the wider CIFRA community — and you’re invited to join the discussion alongside students, ask questions and hear from two people who’ve helped shape the field.

Contemporary “digital / media" arts and culture was created by a number of pioneering festivals founded between the late 1970s and 2000. For many years, my own identity, writing and artworks were shaped by regularly attending many of these festivals.

How do they describe themselves today? The list shows great diversity, and frequent use of longer phrases instead of short terms. No single word dominates: even “digital” and “media”, the most common, each appear in only 5 of the 12 descriptions. taken in Paris, France by @levmanovich

Continuing my Soft Cinema II experiments. Here bands of threads grow across the screen, and the moments when they start, fold and arrive become notes. Higher on the screen means higher notes; dark bands sound lower than light ones.

The sound is inspired by Webern: sparse piano and violin notes, following a fixed order of all twelve tones.

These are two runs: same rules, different drawings. Image and sound are generated live in a browser, by code I wrote with Claude, with 19 settings for the picture and 7 for the sound.

Soft Cinema II applies the principles of generative art to filmmaking, assembling films in real time from media databases using code, rules, and algorithms. The engine can make a single unique film—or run endlessly, never repeating the same sequence twice.

Although it can include AI-generated media, the engine uses explicit algorithms rather than black-box AI models—giving you complete transparency and direct control over every decision.

Now, alongside video, stills, and audio, the system supports executable web code (HTML/JavaScript) as native cinema elements.

This example shows generative abstract animations I coded with Claude. The page includes 20 live controls that can be manipulated dynamically during playback. And just as everything else in a movie authored with the Soft Cinema II engine, these generative parts can evolve infinitely without repetition. Anything built for the browser (from kinetic typography to algorithmic graphics) becomes a living, modular part of the cinema stream.

He will discuss the recurring materials and “artistic signs” central to his practice — eggshells, white feathers, numbers, and lemon-yellow pigment — as well as his concept of the point as a moment of concentration, transition, ending, and beginning.

Alexei Kostroma (@studiokostroma) is an artist, theorist, and researcher based in Berlin and the creator of the concept of the Organic Way.
