Իր նոր գրքի և սեփական ստեղծագործական փորձի հիման վրա Լև Մանովիչը ներկայացրեց գեներատիվ արհեստական բանականությունը որպես տեսողական արվեստի միջոց՝ համեմատելով այն գեղարվեստական այլ մեդիաների հետ։

Drawing on his new book in progress and his own creative practice, Lev Manovich explored generative AI as a visual artistic medium, comparing it with other forms of artistic expression.

The lecture examined three key questions: how AI’s aesthetic preferences challenge the principles of the avant-garde, how generative technologies redefine chance and artistic control, and what happens to individual style and creative identity when thousands of visual styles become available through a single prompt.

For the first CIFRA Open Classroom, we’re bringing together Lev Manovich and José Ramón Alcalá for a conversation about these worlds, how they’ve changed and what it means to find your place among them.
This isn’t a traditional lecture. We’re opening up a university classroom in Cuenca, Spain to the wider CIFRA community — and you’re invited to join the discussion alongside students, ask questions and hear from two people who’ve helped shape the field.

“Soft Cinema II” by Lev Manovich (@levmanovich)

Soft Cinema II is a software system for making films. The artist supplies the media and defines general rules, and the software assembles a film in real time. The system was designed by Lev Manovich and coded with Claude. It has more than a hundred parameters, which allows making variety of films using different editing principles, types of media, and screen layouts.

Every run tells the same voice-over story, but the visuals and their layout on the screen change each time.

The project suggests an alternative to both traditional and AI-based cinema. Traditionally, a film was fully made by its human team and released in a single version. Today, AI is often used to generate some film materials or even a full film — but it still exists as a single version.

In contrast, Soft Cinema II explores “variable cinema”: films that can exist in numerous versions, assembled in real time by software. In contrast to opaque AI models, this software is transparent because every decision follows explicit rules and parameters that can be read and changed.

Կլոր սեղան քննարկումը կանդրադառնա բնության, ընկալման, մարմնականության և տեխնոլոգիական միջնորդավորման հարցերին ժամանակակից մեդիաարվեստում՝ դիտարկելով դրանք ավանգարդի Օրգանական դպրոցի պատմական ժառանգության համատեքստում։ Ձևավորվելով 1912–1915 թվականներին Կազիմիր Մալևիչի, Պավել Ֆիլոնովի, Միխայիլ Մատյուշինի և նրանց համախոհների ստեղծագործական գործունեության շրջանակում՝ Օրգանական դպրոցն առաջ քաշեց արվեստի և ընկալման ամբողջական մոտեցում՝ աշխարհը դիտարկելով որպես փոխկապակցված կենդանի համակարգ։

Թեև Օրգանական դպրոցը հաճախ հակադրվում էր մեքենայացմանը, նրա գեղարվեստական ձգտումները բազմաթիվ ընդհանրություններ ունեն ժամանակակից մեդիաարվեստի հետ։ Դպրոցի ներկայացուցիչները ձգտում էին միավորել պատկերը, ձայնը, լեզուն, շարժումն ու միջավայրը, հաղթահարել տարբեր արվեստաձևերի սահմանները և մշակել ընկալման փորձարարական մոտեցումներ, որոնք կանխորոշեցին ընկղմող, ինտերակտիվ և ժամանակային արվեստի պրակտիկաների համար առանցքային մի շարք հարցեր։

Քննարկմանը կմասնակցեն արվեստագետ և համադրող Ռուբեն Արևշատյանը, արվեստաբան, համադրող, Վենետիկի Կա Ֆոսկարի համալսարանի պրոֆեսոր և Ռուսական, Կենտրոնական Ասիայի և Կովկասի արվեստի ուսումնասիրությունների կենտրոնի (CSAR) տնօրեն Սիլվիա Բուրինին, արվեստագետ և թվային մշակույթի տեսաբան Լև Մանովիչը, MOMUS–Ժամանակակից արվեստի թանգարան–Կոստակիսի հավաքածուի գեղարվեստական տնօրեն Մարիա Ցանցանօղլուն, ինչպես նաև համադրող և ARé մշակութային հիմնադրամի գեղարվեստական տնօրեն Մարինե Կարոյանը։

Քննարկման ընթացքում կդիտարկվեն պատմական այս գաղափարների և թվային տեխնոլոգիաների, արհեստական բանականության, կենսաբանական համակարգերի, շրջակա միջավայրի տվիչային տեխնոլոգիաների և ցանցային ենթակառուցվածքների ազդեցությամբ ձևավորվող ժամանակակից գեղարվեստական պրակտիկաների միջև շարունակականություններն ու խզումները։

Alexei Kostroma reflects on the artistic and philosophical framework he has developed since the early 1990s, tracing connections between natural and social laws, matter, systems, time, and meaning. He will discuss the recurring materials and “artistic signs” central to his practice — eggshells, white feathers, numbers, and lemon-yellow pigment — as well as his concept of the point as a moment of concentration, transition, ending, and beginning.

Creative Coding Barcelona is back with a round table bringing together Dr. Lev Manovich (@levmanovich), Mónica Rikić (@monicarikic), Ioana Vreme Moser (@ioana.vreme.moser), Lukas Truniger (@lukas.truniger) and Marc Vilanova (@marcvilanova.studio).

Starting from a simple question—why does technology still sometimes need to justify its place in a museum?—the conversation will explore how technological languages shape the present, and why they can still meet resistance within the art world.

Technology is part of our everyday lives and of the way we understand the world. Yet some people are still surprised to see it in museums. “I’m more into classical art!” But what does that actually mean? Why is there sometimes such a blunt resistance to technological languages? What language could be better suited to speaking about the present than one that is also helping to shape it?

Artists are tired of having to justify whether a work that uses technology is art at all—what it does or does not do, and what it is supposedly for. Perhaps the issue is not with the works themselves, but with structures and aesthetic expectations that still treat these languages as an exception.

Working with technology means embracing other materials, other timeframes, and other ways of producing, conserving, exhibiting and mediating art. It also means adapting spaces, equipment and institutions to works that may behave, fail, connect, or require maintenance. Technology is not an artistic genre, nor an anomaly that needs to be justified. It is a tool, a material, an extension of our ability to imagine, build and question the world.

It is time to finally move beyond the category of “digital art” as a separate compartment. The challenge now is for institutions, critical discourse and our own expectations to catch up with the present.

And for us to finally stop asking whether it is art.

It is art.

What counts as success in digital art depends entirely on which world you’re standing in.

The media theorist @levmanovich , working in the field since 1984, maps seven: from the pioneers entering art history to the anonymous craft of commissioned media, via museums, festivals, code art, platforms, and spectacle.

Dr. Lev Manovich (@levmanovich) is a Presidential Professor at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, and the founder and director of the Cultural Analytics Lab. He is recognized as one of the most influential thinkers in the world in the fields of digital art, digital culture, media theory, and digital humanities.

In 2013 Manovich appeared in a list of 25 People Shaping the Future of Design next to the world top designers and architects, including Jonathan Ive and Zaha Hadid. In 2014 he was included in 50 Most Interesting People Building the Future - appearing as the only humanities scholar in this list that included CEOs of Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Tesla and famous artists such as Beyoncé and Taylor Swift.

Manovich played a pivotal role in establishing four new research fields: digital culture and new media studies (1991-), software studies (2001-), cultural analytics (2007-), and AI media theory (2017-).
