OPENING SOON: Alex Ponca Stock - Particle and the Wave: Oracles and Symbols for Living and Dying

Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to announce our next exhibition, a solo show by Alex Ponca Stock.

Particle and the Wave features eight abstract artworks that explore the conjunction of modern technological and scientific knowledge with the ancient knowledge handed down from our ancestors. Using the traditional beaded broadcloth found in Osage regalia, Alex Ponca Stock considers a broad array of modern and historical references, including color field painting, early Christian heresies, ancient mound-builders, and quantum physics. The result of her experimentation with larger-scale work, this exhibition is a mature showcase of Ponca Stock’s ability to visually dissect the currents of 21st century life.

Ponca Stock’s practice combines intensive research with the slow, meditative labor of beading to create objects with a strong sense of internal order. The composition of her soft textile works are often reminiscent of the aesthetic of technology—motherboards, logic gates, 3D renderings—without ever betraying the beauty and integrity of the medium. In her choice of color, Ponca Stock is highly attuned not only to the symbolic and emotional power of color, but its physiological effect.

Alex Ponca Stock (b. 1986) is a painter and beadworker from the Gray Horse District of the Osage Nation and the third generation in her family to graduate from the Kansas City Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited by the Denver Art Museum, the First Americans Museum, and the Osage Nation Museum, among others. The artist currently lives and works in Santa Fe, NM.

Exhibition Dates: August 26–October 17, 2026
Reception: Friday, October 2, 6–8pm
Gallery Hours: Wednesday–Saturday, 11 am–4 pm
Location: 514 Central Avenue SW, Albuquerque, NM

Susanna Carlisle and Bruce Hamilton
Messages in Bottles: Hudson Morning
4 minute video sculpture with dance improvisations by Rulan Tangen, glass, steel, and walnut
10.5″ H x 13.5″ W x 5″ D

“This video displays light dancing on a Hudson River Valley stream in upstate New York combined with images of a Native American dancer. The dances of light, water, and woman are beautiful, but they portray a dangerous beauty. The stream is very polluted and symbolizes man’s destructive impact on the environment and Indigenous cultures.” —Susanna Carlisle and Bruce Hamilton

Check the link in our bio to view the full video and get a closer look at the artwork.

Susanna Carlisle (b. 1943) and Bruce Hamilton (1945–2024) have worked with video, sculpture, architecture, and computer programming. Combining their fascination with technology and their backgrounds as architect and carpenter, Carlisle and Hamilton often incorporated a video element with 3-Dimensional constructions. Concerned with human’s contributions to climate change, their work draws attention to natural disasters and the displacement of people, plants, and animals.

In the medieval era, the Christian theology of the trinity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—was often expressed with the three-faced icon depicted here in green beads. The visual paradox of the conjoined faces is a metaphor for the fundamental undefinability of the nature of the trinity. It can only ever be a metaphor, however, just as a diagram of light behaving as a particle or as a wave can never completely represent the actual, incomprehensible nature of quantum particles behaving as both simultaneously.

Come see this artwork in person at the gallery through October 17th.

Beaded Burial, Mound 72, 2026, glass beads on wool, 38 x 34 in

At its peak around 1100 AD, Cahokia was the largest urban settlement north of what is now Mexico and had a large impact on the surrounding Mississippian culture. To date, archeologists have discovered about 80 earthworks, or mounds, built in the city to support temples and dwellings or as burial sites. The largest of these, Monk’s Mound, is 10 stories tall and covers an area of 13.8 acres. Mound 72, which the title of this piece references, is a burial mound in which hundreds of remains were found. One individual was buried with 10,000 marine-shell disc beads arranged in the shape of a falcon surrounding his body.

Today, the Osage and many other indigenous groups trace their lineage back to the original inhabitants of Cahokia and recognize the site as sacred.

NEWLY CONSIGNED: Taos Mountain by Wes Mills

Wes Mill’s work is characterized by his spare accumulation of graphite markings that suggest subjects through negative space and faint allusion. Scratches and dots that could be mistaken for automatic scribbling are in fact intentional, calculated outlines of the spiritual, if not literal forms of the natural world. In this work, scratches through pale blue pigment form a mountain like those surrounding the artist’s alpine home.

Wes Mills’s work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Whitney Museum, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, LA; among others. His exhibitions have been reviewed in major publications including the New York Times, Art in America, and Artforum. His work has been shown at PDX CONTEMPORARY ART (Portland, OR), James Kelly Contemporary (Santa Fe, NM), Richard Levy Gallery (Albuquerque, NM), Peter Blum (New York, NY), Dwight Hackett Projects (Santa Fe, NM), Galerie Albrecht (Munich, Germany), Rhona Hoffman Gallery (Chicago, IL), and the Tamarind Institute (Albuquerque, NM), among others. The artist lives and works in Taos, NM.
