Paula Wilson is one of nine artists in The Woods Before Sunrise: Environment and Place in New Mexico’s Black Contemporary, whose mixed-media artworks centers the natural world and her experiential connection with it.

“I feel that a lot of Black artists hesitate to identify as naturalists because of the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow and being systematically excluded from environmental movements. However, this also gives us an opening to connect on new terms that restore, and find the enduring pathways of interdependence,” Wilson has reflected.

When the exhibition is deinstalled, the salt in this installation will be repurposed in the softener tank of the Museum’s RO system that feeds the humidifiers. The salt that goes into the softener tank is to remove hard minerals and compounds from City water that would otherwise leave deposits in the lines and on the equipment causing corrosion. The system produces high-purity water for the Museum humidifiers to run cleanly and efficiently and the salt is crucial for this process.

The salt for this installation is made possible by the generosity of Intrepid Potash, Carlsbad, New Mexico.

The creative repurpose of the salt is made possible by the Museum’s Maintenance Supervisor, Corinne Toczylowski.

This next chapter for me has been quite the adventure so far. If you are blessed to wake up each day you can guarantee the potential for anything (good or not so great) will happen. But if you work smart with good intentions marvelous things will happen!
