Hello! Not been on here much lately, but have been trying to finish some music… First up, a 10-track mini album of zany, synth-driven material informed by a 3mo stay in Japan back in 2015(!). Video game-y, anime-y, naively upbeat at times and demonic at others. It’s on soundcloud as a 20-min mix and bandcamp for free download (see bio links). Most of these tracks started life on that trip or shortly afterwards (some are from even earlier but fitted the vibe). I’ve wanted to clean them up and pull them together for ages - was trying to get them out before my overland trip to Japan last year, but ran out of time. Still a bit rough’n’ready, more a collection of ideas than ‘finished’ tracks in places, but happy to finally squeeze them into the world :) A quick note on the title, ‘donki suete’. Don Quijote (or ‘donki’) is a chain of discount shops across Japan stocking pretty much anything you can imagine, usually over 5+ floors. They have a cute blue penguin mascot (who wears a Christmas hat year round) and sometimes eels in tanks outside (see artwork). I’m hoping this ‘suete’ (e felt better than i) of sonic offerings channels some of that chaos and silliness for ye. Swipe for clips, interested to know which tracks land!✌️ by @lewisleafs
Hi friends, I’m releasing music for the first time ever today! I started these tracks between 3 and 6 years ago and long assumed, as with all the other music I’ve ever worked on, that they wouldn’t see the light of day. But there’s something about approaching (and, last week, turning) 30 that focuses the mind… After a frenzied 6mo of tweaking over the autumn and winter, I have come to accept these are about as ‘finished’ as they’re going to get. Sharing music is scary. This release feels like a truer expression of ‘me’ than anything I’ve put into the world before, in any context. Which means that the idea of people listening to it, forming opinions on it, likely being a bit confused by it(!) is veeery exposing. But also fun and meaningful for that. I’ll write more about each track over the next week or two - still a bit laid low with the flu, so today is not the day. In the meantime, please have a listen (there are Bandcamp, SoundCloud and Spotify links in my bio). I’ve been so close to these for such a long time that I’m very curious to know what other actual real people think :) Massive thanks to @ellayolande for totally getting what I was looking for in the visuals and making them more beautiful than I had dared to hope. More to share on that front (moving images!) in the coming days. Plus to Rupert Clervaux for doing the mastering so thoughtfully (and encouragingly!). And finally to my sister @hallworthmusic for being an inspiration with her own work and for being the person who, when she listened approvingly to these tracks about 6mo ago, actually made me believe I could finish them and that they would be worth sharing. Love to all, Lewis by @lewisleafs
Fun to return to me indie roots and play in a band for the first time since I was maybe 12? Keys for @hallworthmusic with the most excellent @tombaird_ @theconorreilly & inimitable Luke on the drums. New Hallworth EP out 16th October! Then low-key DJ set in the bar of mostly dance-pop & hyperpop, with detours into 00s garage, euphoric trance, some blissed out breaks etc. Hadn’t been to @folklorehoxton before but beautiful and friendly venue get out and support! Slide 2 - latest @hallworthmusic single ‘Running Blind’, out on all the platforms :) Slide 3 - set list complete with every chord in case I got lost lol Slide 5 - usb history Slide 6 - me & h, besties for life 💜 by @lewisleafs
In June/July of this year, I spent the best part of a month moving around Germany, France and Spain. It was a highly unusual time: right in the middle of the most intense heatwaves the continent has ever seen, navigating wildfires, storm risk, e. coli outbreaks, etc. I’ve ended up writing about it - see link in the usual place (‘Living in the future’). Incorporating fête de la musique in Paris, Fusion festival near Berlin, a wedding near Bordeaux, the Tour de France (and, indirectly, the World Cup), a holiday in the Basque Country, and the boat trip home. Plus some preliminary reflections on where we go from here. Keen to discuss - thanks to those of you who have already chatted to me about these issues! by @lewisleafs
huge news ! I’m playing a release show for my upcoming EP ~Upswing~ at @folklorehoxton with support from the very amazing wonderful @jazbeeson and @joelyjune 💫 @lewisleafs will be playing a killer DJ set to close out the evening and make it a party ! tickets available in bio !! can’t wait to see ya !! by @lewisleafs
ⓛⓔⓐⓕ ⓝⓞⓓⓔ leaf node is a DJ and producer working across tempos and styles including dubstep, techno, hyperpop, hardcore, ambient and more. If something has a good melody, fun polyrhythms, unusual texture or any strange noises, he’s probably into it. One of the Kinesis core team, he often plays b2b as half of @vlplusplus or with @ncd_soundsystem . For this solo outing he’s going all vinyl, unpacking the stacks of records he bought as a teenager for a 140bpm set of dubstep, post-dubstep and wider UK bass, mostly from 2007-11 (but particularly 2009). Expect tunes on the likes of @hessleaudio , @hyperdubrecords , @hotflushuk , @tempa.ltd , Punch Drunk, @hemlock.recordings , @planet.mu , @werk.records , Ramp, @numbers12345678 , @nightslugs , @butterzsound , Nonplus, @swamp81 … A real privilege to get to try some of these out on @earthfrequencysoundsystem ! Swipe for a few records that will definitely be in the bag! Untold - Anaconda. Early Hessle weirdness, sub-heavy and wonky af. Mega addictive. Rustie - Bad Science. The Scotland connection: hype-y, synth heavy, a sign of what would come later with Glass Swords etc. @zomby - Strange Fruit. One of so many tracks of his to pick from…typically bloopy but with a special underwater beauty. @joy_orbison_ - Hyph Mngo. Perhaps the defining post-dubstep tune? The most transcendent chord drop imaginable. Last day to grab early bird tickets, at link in bio! Friday is coming soon!! by @lewisleafs
I’m excited to welcome @lewisleafs to the mix series! Having been to the second ever @kinesis_ldn I knew the music and vibe was worth sticking around for, especially given the eclectic nature of the mix we made. Combining our passion for the different corners of the music world, from warm-up to big tunes, the whole set is kind of like a warm up set where you end up thinking “how did we get here?” by the end. Hello! Just uploaded a long overdue mix to SoundCloud, linked in the usual place. It’s my take on ‘low end psychedelia’ (phrase borrowed from @basicchanel.mp3 writings…low end in terms of frequencies, not quality - hopefully!). The sort of set I’d think to play at a festival like Transcendence or pe:rsona, but keeping things wide angle and not too turned inward. Inviting you both to feel the soil beneath your feet as you dance AND look up to a wheeling sun/moon as you do. If that makes any sense :) It’s actually from way back in August ‘24. I’d been planning to land it in a mix series or sth but am bad with things like that, so it’s just been sat on my hard drive. But I still like it - my first time starting fast and ratcheting up to 200bpm before tipping over into half-time to rebuild from 100. Which I’d been wanting to try for ages! Also with longer, more patient blends, for a change… The tempo flip happens halfway through, and comes as a reset. A change in perspective, an ‘eye swap’. Kind of like this period between the years that we’re in now, when the outgoing one has ramped up to a close, and you’re recalibrating before finding your way into the next. Anyway, hope you enjoy. It covers quite a lot of ground, so fingers crossed there’ll be something in there that tickles your toes. I’m planning to keep my time on here v limited in the new year, but am looking forward to seeing you all out in the real world soon! (The artists who actually made the music I have merely strung together are tagged in the post, and there’s a tracklist on sc. The painting on slide 2 is The Final Submission in Fire on Ice by Raqib Shaw, hanging in the National Portait Gallery.) by @lewisleafs

It's October! And for this month’s @voices_radio show to celebrate @lewisleafs return to London we're doing a VL++ special! @vlplusplus Usually found playing speedy euphoric silliness to close @kinesis_ldn parties, this time we're exploring a slower moodier and groovier side of our collections, playing some recent newly found electro, bass, breaks, and techno tracks, but it wouldn’t be VL++ without a little craziness here and there :] Tune in tomorrow 6am, or find the mix on soundcloud via our bios after. Swipe for behind-the-scenes footage, tracklist, and a little bonus clip of some messing around 🍭 save the date 22nd Nov?? 👀 by @lewisleafs
