For the past 25 years, Pat Mueller and I have been talking about a simple question: "why isn't there a national college newspaper?"
That's The Quad. We gather the best journalism from student newspapers across the country and put it in one place, always credited to the student who wrote it and the paper that ran it. It's live now. Before we start telling the world about it, I want to hear what's wrong from people who'll actually say so.

Two things, about six minutes total:

‘On Lake Cayuga’ for Stuart and Mhairi Craig

In all my life
The peace of Cayuga lake
Has always been
What nurtured my heart
No
Matter where I went or how far I left it—
To be still beside it
To toss pebbles
Or even fish (and toss back in of course)
Paddle board on it
To dive in and let its murky green
Wash over me
To cross it by swimming is a goal in this lifetime
To set sail
Or motor away
Dare we say a younger self did seadoo
And wake board
Or tube
But always I found myself
Pondering its mysteries
It’s barges long sunk
It’s women swimmin’
Or cardboard races
Did I tell you,
At point a bridge spanned its width? to Lansing someone told me
I said it went nowhere
and it was best to fall in the water and so it did
Alas
It does ice over
And makes skipping rocks
And action in ice skating
It hides it wonder but is breathtaking nonetheless all year round
It’s geese depart
To come back again
This beautiful part of my soul lake Cayuga
Sings with its waters
With its sister lakes which the Indian god sank their fingers down
And pushed and said—that
Is enough for today.
All water runs to it from the many streams of this land and now
And now
You have what all young boys and girls dream of for miles and miles away
A refuge on the lake
A piece of that land however ramshackle you can manage it
However grand
it may be planned
let the land you cast your first corner stone
be blessed with the joy
Of peaceful sleep and daring larks of the deep to the shallowest end

Absolutely blown away by the craftsmanship of Anchors Away! They completely transformed our old, worn-out entrance into this beautiful new covered porch, and we couldn’t be happier with the result.

Excited to be back in Rochester for an evening at Book Culture Pittsford! No, I won’t be getting garbage plate, those aren’t gluten free, dairy free aren’t they?

Join me on Thursday, July 30 at 6:00 PM for a reading from The Song of the Midnight Rider, followed by a conversation about the novel, writing, publishing, and whatever else you’d like to talk about. I’ll also be signing books after the event, and copies will be available at the bookstore.

Independent bookstores like Book Culture mean so much to authors, and I’m grateful for the invitation. If you’re in the Rochester area—or know someone who loves books—I hope you’ll stop by. I’d love to catch up with old friends, meet new readers, and spend the evening talking stories.

We’ve been soaking up these first precious weeks as a family of four, and we’re so excited to finally introduce our daughter.

On June 11, 2026, in the middle of a blackout here in Trumansburg, we welcomed Alba Lalita Santí into the world during a peaceful home birth.

She arrived healthy at 8 lbs 10 oz, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Shona was absolutely incredible—strong, calm, and fierce through it all. It was in her words, EPIC. She’s still recovering from a tailbone injury from the birth, but she’s doing an incredible job with her PT brain.

Big brother Gordie absolutely adores his little sister. Watching him love on Alba has been amazing.
