Silent Pressures - Opening 14th of October, 18:00 – 21:00, Atelier 35, Bucharest

Anna Dumitriu collaborates with Dr. Alexandra Ciocan to explore the power of edelweiss and smoketree calli extracts against pathogens. Can the mythology related to warding off malevolent forces or symbols of immortality gain new meanings in today's context?

Silent Pressures is the concluding exhibition of the Otherwise Residency 2026. Curated by Sabina Suru, it features works by Alexandra Costea in collab with Cristina Moisescu and Ana Zamfirescu, Anna Dumitriu in collab with Alexandra Ciocan, and Dominika Glogowsky working with Mihai Stoica and Théophile Humann-Guilleminot

Otherwise Residency is a Marginal program, in collaboration with the Institute of Biology Bucharest and 2Celsius.

Art–science mediation by Roxana Nicoară (IBIOL) and art–science consultancy by Andrei Tudose.

When environments turn hostile, plants don't just sit there - they alter their internal chemistry to survive. Through secondary metabolism, they produce specific compounds to protect themselves from predators, harsh weather, or pollution.

In the lab, Alexandra Ciocan and Anna Dumitriu are exposing smoketree and edelweiss callus cultures to different environmental stressors. Their collaborative research explores how nature rewrites its own biology to cope with a changing world.

Alexandra Ciocan (@lexa_gabrielle) is a PhD researcher at IBIOL - @ibb_bucharest in the field of Plant Biology, whose work focuses on plant secondary metabolism, applying plant biotechnology, biochemical and molecular biology techniques in order to explore how plants adapt to environmental changes.

Anna Dumitriu (@annadumitriuart) is a pioneering British artist who works with BioArt, sculpture, installation, and digital media to explore our relationship with nature and technology, focussing on infectious diseases, synthetic biology, AI and robotics.

Coup de foudre. Followed by several nights of obsessive thinking. Until, one day, I decided to make it myself.
What followed was a provocative journey: meticulously counting each bead from the photo and translating it onto millimetrical paper • sourcing the proper materials • stringing beads for 12 h/day on the vertical loom my father built for me (his first one!) • weaving in the ends • et voilà.
Lesson: if you genuinely desire something, you'll do anything to get it.
