Curatorial tours with Sabina Suru in the Silent Pressures exhibition, part of the Climate Change Summit extended program. Thank you for everyone who joined the conversation! Part of the Otherwise Residency program, Marginal’s core platform for artistic research at the intersection of art, science, and public policy. It provides artists and researchers with the time, resources, and context to explore questions that exceed conventional disciplinary boundaries, allowing art to take an active stance towards contemporary environmental issues. The second run of the art–science research residency, developed in collaboration with the Institute of Biology Bucharest of the Romanian Academy and 2Celsius, connects artists and specialists in scientific research, pollution monitoring and environmental policy, in three explorations of the ways in which we relate to otherness and the non-human across perceptual strata. Cultural partners: Atelier 35, Zile și Nopți, French Institute in Romania, Austrian Cultural Forum Bucharest Acknowledgements: Clean Air Task Force, Radio Guerrilla Otherwise Residency 2026 is co-financed by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund - AFCN, and implemented with the financial support of the French Embassy in Romania and the French Institute in Romania. On October 15th, Anna Dumitriu and Alexandra Ciocan conducted a workshop with students in the framework of Transper, examining the antimicrobial power of edelweiss and smoketree callus cultures, at UNATC/ CINETic. Images from the Silent Pressures exhibition opening on October 14 - an occasion to collectively ask what happens when different ways of perceiving, knowing, and inhabiting the world meet. The exhibition concluding the second edition of Otherwise Residency, curated by Sabina Suru, brought together projects from Alexandra Costea in collaboration with Cristina Moisescu and Ana Zamfirescu, Anna Dumitriu in collaboration with Alexandra Ciocan, and Dominika Glogowski working with Mihai Stoica and Théophile Humann-Guilleminot. Bringing artistic research into dialogue with biology, medicine, mythology, and environmental inquiry, the three projects created a space to stay with what is not always noticeable, measurable, or easy to name. How do fragile temporalities and materialities shape our sense of identity? What can science tell us when it meets vernacular knowledge, or history when it encounters the future? And what does it mean to embody invisibility when its consequences are felt on both individual and planetary scales? Thank you to everyone who joined us at Atelier 35 and contributed to the conversation! Photos by Calin Szanto. 14th of October, 18:00 – 21:00, Atelier 35, Bucharest The opening of the Silent Pressures exhibition, curated by Sabina Suru, concludes the second edition of the Otherwise Residency. Imagined as an open-ended exploration, the 3 artistic research projects developed during the residency, deal with the in-betweenness increasingly present in our societies. How can nature reflect back on our identity when fragile temporalities and materialities collide? How can medicine function at the crossroads of science and mythology, and history and the future? And how can we embody invisibility when it's menacing our very existence, on an individual and a planetary scale? With works by Alexandra Costea in collab with Cristina Moisescu and Ana Zamfirescu, Anna Dumitriu in collab with Alexandra Ciocan, and Dominika Glogowsky working with Mihai Stoica and Théophile Humann-Guilleminot, the exhibition delves into topics of survival, evolution and resilience, across various scales of time and space.  Otherwise Residency is a Marginal program, in collaboration with the Institute of Biology Bucharest and 2Celsius. Visited @buca_herbarium at @ibb_bucharest with @lexa_gabrielle as part of research into the medicinal plants edelweiss and smoke tree. I showed them the “Blue Flower” augmented reality app. I even saw the hairs on edelweiss that attract pollinators to their tiny flowers under the microscope. Many specimens were over 100 years old. When environments turn hostile, plants don't just sit there - they alter their internal chemistry to survive. Through secondary metabolism, they produce specific compounds to protect themselves from predators, harsh weather, or pollution. In the lab, Alexandra Ciocan and Anna Dumitriu are exposing smoketree and edelweiss callus cultures to different environmental stressors. Their collaborative research explores how nature rewrites its own biology to cope with a changing world. Alexandra Ciocan (@lexa_gabrielle) is a PhD researcher at IBIOL - @ibb_bucharest in the field of Plant Biology, whose work focuses on plant secondary metabolism, applying plant biotechnology, biochemical and molecular biology techniques in order to explore how plants adapt to environmental changes. Anna Dumitriu (@annadumitriuart) is a pioneering British artist who works with BioArt, sculpture, installation, and digital media to explore our relationship with nature and technology, focussing on infectious diseases, synthetic biology, AI and robotics. We plated up 40 Petri dishes of 4 types of chromogenic agar with Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Salmonella and Listeria to test antimicrobial activity from my collaborator Dr Alexandra Gabriella Ciocan’s extracts and compounds from edelweiss and smoke tree plants - as part of my “Otherwise” art-science residency with Marginal curated by Sabina Suru. We are using autoclaved silk in the Petri dishes to capture the growth and effect on the bacteria. Let’s hope it works! Also check out our nice lab coats - this is the best fitting one I’ve worn in years and Alexandra has a super cute shirt sleeve one with a jaunty orange trim! @marginal.ro @sabina.suru @lexa_gabrielle
