Liam Fallon’s (@lfallon) practice explores queer culture through the manipulation of everyday objects and industrial materials, examining the relationship between public and private space. Inspired by Jean Genet’s 'Un Chant D’amour', Fallon investigates how love, desire, and loss are expressed through environments that are simultaneously visible and deeply intimate. Working with aluminium, Jesmonite, and wood, he draws on associations with labour, masculinity, and permanence, creating sculptures that contrast material solidity with emotional vulnerability. Familiar forms are transformed into theatrical, ambiguous objects: walls are stitched together, sculptures unzip to reveal hidden interiors, and functional structures become uncanny monuments. Through these interventions, he reimagines ordinary spaces as coded expressions of queer identity, challenging distinctions between concealment and visibility, and creating sculptural landscapes where queer presence is no longer hidden but asserted with confidence and permanence.

🗓 Open until the 11th Sep 2026, Thur – Sun, 12 – 6pm

📍 Hypha Gallery South Bank, 42 Southwark Bridge Rd, London SE1 9EU

💭 The exhibition’s title references the wartime instruction to make do and mend, a phrase that asked people to work with what they had, to repair rather than discard, and to find resourcefulness in the face of scarcity. Reframed for a city of rising costs, disappearing studios, and shrinking public funding, it feels less like history and more like lived experience. Make Do / Make Space is a rallying cry for a generation of self-starting artists who have refused to wait for museums, galleries, and cultural institutions to open up.

Ahead of the PV on the 6th August, I’d like to continue the introductions. Next up, I am pleased to introduce the work of:

@lfallon
Liam Fallon's practice explores queer culture through the manipulation of everyday objects and industrial materials, examining the relationship between public and private space. Inspired by Jean Genet's 'Un Chant D'amour', he investigates how love, desire, and loss are expressed through environments that are simultaneously visible and deeply intimate. Working with aluminium, Jesmonite, and wood, Fallon draws on associations with labour, masculinity, and permanence, creating sculptures that contrast material solidity with emotional vulnerability.

@naomi_ellis
Naomi Ellis is a London-based artist whose practice incorporates sculpture, marbling, print, moving image and socially engaged projects. Her work demonstrates a particular interest in notions of connectivity and distance in our increasingly technological age. Despite being immersed in a world saturated with virtual information, much of her work stems from a desire to return to the physical. Rooted in a fascination with geology, water, maps, and the search for Utopia; Naomi draws inspiration from remote islands and satellite imagery as vital points for critical reflection.

@kellyewingartist
Kelly Ewing's practice explores the intersections of Irish folklore, ecological collapse, and speculative future landscapes. Ewing creates immersive environments that bring mythology into dialogue with contemporary environmental realities, inviting new ways of engaging with landscape in a time of ecological crisis. Rooted in personal and cultural connections to Northern Ireland, their work responds to urgent environmental concerns, including the ongoing ecological degradation of Lough Neagh and the wider impacts of climate change on the Irish landscape

STUDIO VISIT

Dropped by the studio of Liam Fallon recently as he was in the early stages of a new body of work being put together for an upcoming solo show.

Liam’s work has always perfectly balanced an immediate visual appeal with slower burn concepts threading his practice together. Describing his current experiments and ideas to me I came away buzzing on his behalf. The historical references, nods to art history and the tactility of materials and craftsmanship on display was an actual joy to delve into.

——

Liam Fallon (b. 1995) was born In Stoke on Trent and now lives and works in London. He Graduated from Manchester School of Art in 2017 and has gone on to exhibit both nationally and internationally including Voidoid Archive, Glasgow, Sluice Art Fair, New York and DUVE Berlin. Shortly after graduating, he was awarded 2nd place at the Woon Prize and in both 2018 and 2020, was shortlisted for the Mark Tanner Sculpture Prize. In 2019 he was one of the first 10 recipients to be awarded the Pangaea Sculpture production award and in 2020 was one of the recipients of the Henry Moore foundation Artist Awards.
