Xander Cobb takes us on a journey through Friday Night Rat Catchers, by Lisa Fagan & Lena Engelstein. The work disgusts, impresses, and flings itself through a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants process, and the resulting review is an equally fun read!

All Fringe coverage at the link in the bio.

Image Description: A dark teal border on the left and bottom edges of a white rectangle. In the center, an image: On a dark smoky stage littered with fruit loops and rocks, two dancers whip their hair forward from a wide second position plie (legs wide, turned out, and bent), their hands smacking their thighs. The dancers are dressed like it’s the 70s and they’re going to the club: one in an orange halter jumpsuit with sparkly fringe, the other wearing tall silver heeled boots, purple booty shorts, and a fluorescent green shirt with flared sleeves. In the lower-left corner of the post, in dark teal and black, a lowercase t and uppercase D, the logo for Thinking Dance. Above the image are blue letters that read Friday Night Rat Catchers Suck the Titties Dry, and below the image are blue letters that read by Xander Cobb. This week we are celebrating the 110th anniversary of the publication of Hugo Ball’s Dada Manifesto! In honor of the occasion, please enjoy a visualization of his nonsensical noise poem, KARAWANE. Starring our favorite dance-theater artists of all time, Lisa Fagan & Lena Engelstein. (@lfdanceproblems & @lenaengelstein )

"Every word that is spoken and sung here says at least this one thing: that this humiliating age has not succeeded in winning our respect.” - Hugo Ball (1886-1927)

Make movement that speaks for itself.

Physical Performance Practices with Lisa Fagan
July 12-18

Theater and performance makers often think of movement in terms of “5, 6, 7, 8.” This workshop invites you to explore how you move in a far more expansive sense. Using scores, prompts, and compositional experiments, you will get deep into your body, unlocking its potential as sources of unique, unbridled creativity.

At the core of this workshop is a commitment to finding curiosity, rigor, and joy in the body, so that you can develop, probe, and stretch theatrical ideas. Each day begins with a rigorous warm-up, and then the stage is set for a variety of exercises on your feet, as well as group discussions and reflections. You will have ample opportunity to generate new material—both individually and as a hydra-headed collaborative ensemble—as well as the chance to share work-in-progress.

You may sweat! You may get tired! You may find yourself doing things you’ve never done before! We will work and rest—and hydrate—and have an extremely weird fun time. The beauty of a physical performance practice is that it makes space for extreme levels of play, failure, openness, and camaraderie.

Prior training in physical theater or dance is not required. Comfort with exertion and risk-taking, however, is vital. by @lfdanceproblems

Friday Night Rat Catchers is Lisa Fagan and Lena Engelstein’s signature blend of dance-adjacent movement madness and theatrical disorientation at Under the Radar as part of The Live Artery Festival. The year is 1976, the bassline drives, and the martinis never run dry. The contestants nearly lose their minds with the pleasure of being selected, but The Host (Marianne Rendón) has changed the game. Cement punctures the dancehall, the party grinds to a halt, and an inky night belches to the surface. What could go wrong? The stage sensation returns after a highly acclaimed world premiere for its second run at New York Live Arts (@nylivearts).
