On September 5th and 6th, Jungwon Phee, our artist-in-residence, will be opening his studio and showing his work at LIA. He will also be opening THE THIRD Gallery—a new gallery that will be part of the Spinnerei gallery complex—on September 5th with a solo exhibition. Everyone is invited! Don’t miss it 💐 During my residency at LIA, I am examining whether my material experiments rooted in Eastern ink and industrial mediums like cement translate and adapt to a new European environment. By analyzing how my core textures evolve or maintain their structural integrity here, I am developing a series of black paintings in preparation for my upcoming exhibition at the Spinnerei gallery in September. Through these ink-based layers, I explore my identity as well as my central artistic statement: "Emotions are universal, while expressions are subjective." by @lia_programme

We’d like to extend a warm welcome to Matijs, an artist from the Netherlands who will be joining us during this residency. We’re happy to have you here! 💐💐💐 My practice investigates the friction between the art historical canon, contemporary visual culture, and the uncanny nature of memory and mortality. Today's consciousness is non-linear. We digest seventeenth-century Baroque drama, nineteen-fifties Abstract Expressionist rage, and nineteen-seventies conceptual minimalism simultaneously within seconds. Rooted in traditional techniques—from classical portraiture and religious iconography to vanitas still life—my paintings disrupt familiar historical forms through layered painterly interventions, gestural impasto, unnatural palette shifts, and surreal juxtapositions. ​By fracturing figure and form, I strip historical subjects of their original authority. Empty garments, animal relics, and disorienting interior spaces act as quiet stage sets, while isolated objects, distorted motifs, and unexpected shifts in scale subvert the solemnity of old-world traditions. ​The resulting works inhabit a threshold between presence and absence, memory and corruption, transforming canonical imagery into lingering psychological landscapes where reverence meets absurdity. by @lia_programme

This summer I had the great privilege to be a part of the Leipzig International Arts program residency. After two years of intense study @newyorkacademyofart this was a much needed 2 months of artistic rejuvenation. Here is a recap of how the time was spent. Lots of painting, reading, swimming at the lake, cards, good food, beer, and friends.
