Spinnerei-Serie
11–13.09.2026
@paula.piranha

My first solo show in Leipzig! Thanks everyone for coming. It felt very nice and warm.

These three works I’m showing are based on the photo archives of the Baumwolle Spinnerei, which I was kindly introduce to in the Archiv Massiv museum and all of them are made in @lia_programme LIA residency . Most of the photographs was about GDR times, which is very interesting for me for its ambiguity, and how I can relate to it with my USSR background .

People in the old photographs are often reduced from to representatives of their time. I wanted to bring their lives back into view, looking for moments of everyday life that exist outside the frame of the era: a crying child, friends drinking liquor straight from a bottle, someone flirting, someone quarrelling. Through painting, I approach and animate those moments. I also incorporated printed versions of the photographs into the show to make their presence in the project more visible.

It was super interesting to talk to people who grew up in Spinnerei, went to its kindergarten, whose mothers worked there, or who were squatting there in the 90s alongside Neo Rauch and others.

I think GDR life is very underrepresented in cultural narratives. Hardly anyone outside knows much beyond Good Bye, Lenin! and the complexity of this period, and the sadness, hopes, resentments, nostalgia and disapproval surrounding it, the huge diversity of views among local people about this history hardly ever become subjects of films or research outside the region. But exactly this history and its lasting trauma is affecting current politics massively.

I really liked that my perspective as a foreigner was not seen as intrusive by the people I talked to.

Dear people,

Last weekend i did my performance at the Rundgang, opening weekend of the artistic season at the @spinnereileipzig.

Following my residency at LIA in the Spinnerei, I will be presenting 'A Broken Circle of Us' during the weekend of September 5th and 6th at LIA - Leipzig International Art Programme (Halle 18, 2nd floor). The performances took place on:

- Saturday September 5th at 13:00 and 16:30
- Sunday September 6th at 13:00.

I have returned to Leipzig last july to create new work at LIA @lia_programme , Leipziger International Artist Program at the Spinnerei. There i developed a performance titled 'A Broken Circle of Us', together with sound designer Jan Paul Poet (DE) @noitatiga and my sculptures made at EKWC @ekwc_oisterwijk , European ceramic work center.

I wore a costume made by the fantastic
Katalina Zepeda @futuragonia

'A Broken Circle of Us' explores connection between the diverse voices and perspectives of the visitors and Rundgang participants. It creates a spatial drawing through sound, physicality, and charcoal surrounding the ceramic installation of the Radio Tower.

Ps. Thank you Marina and Katalina and Anna for all the support.

This summer I had the great privilege to be a part of the Leipzig International Arts program residency. After two years of intense study @newyorkacademyofart this was a much needed 2 months of artistic rejuvenation. Here is a recap of how the time was spent. Lots of painting, reading, swimming at the lake, cards, good food, beer, and friends.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible for us.

《The Black Path》

Opening Reception
5-6 SEP 2026

THE THIRD Leipzig
Spinnereistraße 7 / Halle 4B
04179 Leipzig, Germany
(Thu-Sat 12-5 PM)

THE THIRD Leipzig is pleased to announce the opening of its Leipzig space with 《The Black Path》, a solo exhibition by Korean artist Jungwon Phee, opening on 5 SEP 2026.

Phee’s practice begins with personal experience and memory, yet resists settling into fixed imagery or narrative. In 《The Black Path》, material, surface, and the physical traces of time become central to an ongoing inquiry into presence and perception.
