12 years ago today I passed my sommelier exam. My reward? My cat, Picpoul the Pretzel Prince, he was the first pet I ever called my own and almost instantly was family. During that time he successfully escaped at least 7 times, pet anyone that came to my house and experienced my 30’s with me. He was smart, weird and loved to moon light. I say I adopted him but he honestly jumped to me when we first met and the rest was history. It’s with a welt of pain to say that he crossed over to the other side today. He will be greatly missed.

It’s funny how inspiration isn’t something we can actively seek, sometimes it finds us. If we are lucky we are paying attention. I heard the most inspiring words from a colleague that said, “when you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life”. For everyone that knows me, I’m competitive. Failure is not (and never will be) an option. I implore you to go follow what makes you happy and pursue it until you achieve it. People will talk about you, don’t let the negative comments phase you, instead let them fuel you. Negative comments don’t come from leaders but rather people that wish they had your drive, motivation and desire. That’s ok. Give your all even when people don’t see your sacrifice. Work harder when no one notices. I want to share my motto. Wake up and teach someone your craft, your passion or your skill. If you’re capable of reaching just one person a month that’s 12 a year. If they do the same it’s 144. Let’s make a wave not a ripple. Be you. Let’s win. by @liaisomm

When I found out about Deux Fête Club, I said challenge accepted. The initiation is simple, 2 festivals, 1 day and you must listen to 2 bands and eat 2 meals at each. That was where it started. After being initiated, I began to try to recruit people. This is not an easy feat. Two festivals on the same day are rare and often times require travel or a dedication to an early timeline.

Today, I’m proud to earn the Bronze+ badge. Today, we went to Gumbo Fest in Westwego (never been) and Oktoberfest (first time also). Deux Fête truly challenges you to live the best version of your life on a given day. Support local, eat local, embrace the culture and spread it further.

I’m elated to have Iris humor me and join me in this passage. October is known in this club as the “Mes d’Oro”. A month traditionally known for newcomers to attempt this feat with the opportunities abounding.

Friends, today is unforgettable. I encourage you all to join me. The club has only grown in numbers and is looking for people who want to live the best version of their day.

What do you love and feel passionate about? Is this your profession? Honestly I hope it is. If it isn’t, why is that? Between passion and happiness where do we define the difference?

I believe passions are happiness but happiness isn’t always defined as passion. We are very complex beings that sometimes we struggle with the concept of happiness. We all want it but feel it’s evading and there’s no reason for that. What stops us from accomplishing that? Us.

Don’t be your worst enemy. We sometimes think others are against us but honestly it’s us. No one else.

There is a neighbor, who admittedly I don’t know their name, but when I walked Sir Scruffy, he sees me and we exchange politeness, today he said something that triggered my general response. I asked how he was and he said, “I’m better than most”. My response, as all of you have heard was, “every day above ground is better than below it”.

We need to appreciate our blessings. We all have low moments. If things get hard, I’m an ear. That’s all anyone needs. Look, we are all a grain of sand when you look at the spectrum of what this world (galaxy) is. Never forget the importance of how you can help someone or equally need that same guidance.

The only reason I placed a pic of Sir Scruffy, my dog, is because I can look at him and know that right before I go to work he gives me a guilt trip. Why am I leaving? But when I return, the amount of healing happiness I get, whereas it doesn’t relate to my career, relates to my life and an area we all need a healthy amount. by @liaisomm

When I was let go from my first ever wine director position I felt betrayed, upset and lost. Within 2 hours of being let go, I was contacted by Cary. 3 weeks later after meeting with Chad Ortis I was given a second shot.

The difference between a leader and a boss, is that the leader will jump in and do whatever is necessary to accomplish the task. I remember a night when we were short on people and Chad raised his sleaves and took a station. I was floored. Why didn’t I do that? There were times we were in a pinch for tables and he just figured it out. How come I couldn’t figure that out? The reason is that leadership isn’t instant, it’s learned and it’s built despite the naysayers. You will make many mistakes before you define your legacy.

I can’t emphasize enough that as humans we all just need someone to believe in us. I know I do. This restaurant wasn’t built on sheer greatness, it was built on trust. NEVER FORGET THAT!

To quote someone smarter than me, “I hope that either all of us or none of us are judged not by the actions of our weakest moments, but rather the strength we show when and if we’re ever given a second chance”.

I can honestly say that in my moment of weakness, both Cary and Chad saw my potential as they have in all of the people that have worked there. I have always looked to give my all, Chad brought that out in me. When I faltered, he counseled me. Look, being a GM is hard. He made it seem effortless. I will forever remember this time and support his future success and continue our friendship. Chad Ortis is arguably the best GM I’ve worked for.

I have made many mistakes in my life. Tons. Ask my friends. But the decision I’ll never regret is joining Chad Ortis’s team. I’m blessed to be brought in. I’m lucky to know him. I’m blessed to be part of the staff and grow with them. Never forget where you started. Continue your path towards your goal and know that there are leaders that are trying to help you grow. by @liaisomm

What is the difference between routines and traditions? That’s a hard one but I believe inherently we know the significance of both. Whereas routines happen daily, a tradition happens on a grander scale albeit less frequently but on an impactful and agreed upon time.

Waking up, exercising, brushing your teeth, these are all routines. Cooking a turkey, buying meaningful presents or scaring people as Krampus, these are traditions. While some we share, others we unintentionally build as we grow to know and love one another and in many ways they’re an ode to the people we respect.

Where as routines help us on a daily basis, traditions build us on a yearly basis even if it’s just for one day. That makes them all the more special. We need these emblematic gestures of remembrance because they bring us back to a moment where we felt loved, acknowledged or merely accepted and part of the pack.

Friends, whatever your tradition is today, share it or keep it to yourself but remember to continue it and make sure it survives as long as the memory that keeps this act alive. I might not make king cake bread pudding and gumbo every year, but I’ll never not watch a version of ghostbusters, saber a bottle of Rosa Regale and drink village level White Burgundy as long as my heart has a beat in it on Mardi Gras day. You do you. Be safe (or live dangerously, I’m not here to tell you how to live your life) and I hope you had a happy Mardi Gras. This year was a little different and the traditions were slightly modified for me but ultimately there was a game plan from the second the day started. Game plan: victory. That was accomplished. First Zulu and 50 coconuts caught.

I’ll never forget the significance of this and the time period of why this was created. It’s 11 years later. Folks in the service industry that have migrated, moved on or know what that picture means… let’s reconstitute it and get the proper response to ensure service and hospitality is met. We all get inspired or angered from the same litmus. For those that are offended, that’s not my intention. PTSD is real. For those that this inspires, let’s carry the torch. I must say of the most inspiring things this man told me, I’ll carry through life. “If you ask a car dealer what’s under the hood and they can’t answer, then why do you trust them?
