Today the Minneapolis City Council successfully delivered a veto-proof vote to repeal the adult bathhouse ban that was established in 1988; a relic of the city’s complicated history and decision-making amidst the AIDS epidemic.

In the 80’s, with a lack of information and education available on the stigmatized virus and its spread, the city council moved to put the ban in place based on the misconception that adult bathhouses were hotspots for HIV transmission.

“38 years… 38 years…” repeated Patrick Scully, a local activist and artist, pictured in the first photo being embraced by Dylan Boyer, development director at the Aliveness Project (@alivenessmn) after the votes were declared in the council’s chambers this morning.

Proud to have documented this moment of history for @mprnews and @samstroozas’ story, who has been contributing beautiful reporting about the bathhouse ban and its history for the past several months! taken in Minneapolis, Minnesota by @liamjamesphoto

Fun little DIY project 👨🏻‍🔧 this winter I made a leaning photo book display shelf out of plywood for my in-home office ✨

This was something I had envisioned and made a simple design for months ago, and was able to make a reality thanks to the folks at @minnesotatoollibrary – after becoming a member, I attended an “Intro to Shop Tools” at the NE Mpls location to familiarize myself with their power tools, before returning to work on my project during open workshop hours.

Shoutout to the workshop’s volunteers (especially my buddy Michael!) who helped me execute my design each step of the way, while never doing anything *for* me. Tbh it was a super empowering experience & I had a blast 🤗 taken in Minneapolis, Minnesota by @liamjamesphoto

“The shooting finally stopped. Then came everything else”

Photos published online today for @cnn, with powerful writing by editor Michelle Krupa (@mkrupa78), whose reporting explores how the Annunciation Catholic School and Church community in Minneapolis is navigating trauma after the deadly school shooting last August.

This winter, I joined Michelle inside the school for a few days, documenting the new normal of daily life for students, teachers, and staff. (slides 2-11).

In the spring, I spent time with student survivors David Haeg (12, 13, 14) and Sophia Forchas (15), who were both shot and injured in the attack, as well as the families of Fletcher Merkel (1, 16, 17) and Harper Moyski (18, 19, 20), the two children who were killed.

for @wildsam magazine – I spent a day with the fine folks at @vistabuleteardrops, hanging around their showroom + factory in St. Paul where they assemble their bespoke, made-to-order camping trailers with a signature teardrop shape.

first and last portraits are of Vistabule’s owner, Bert Taylor, who designed the vintage-inspired trailers.

photographed entirely on film ✨🎞️💫

loved working with @samsha.n on this!

(and if you’re actually reading my caption, I have a little secret for you – I made these photos 1 year ago today lol 🫣 – because sometimes, you forget to share work from your favorite assignment of 2025 on social media 🤷🏻‍♂️) taken in Vistabule Teardrop Trailers by @liamjamesphoto

Little Cookie House on the Prairie 🍪🏠✨

Welcome to the @daciemoses house at @carletoncollege, where students are welcome at any hour of the day to study, hang, take a nap on the porch, rehearse (if you’re the Singing Knights a cappella group), and most famously, bake!

A very IYKYK (I didn’t know) hidden gem of Minnesota, I spent 24 hours in Northfield visiting the house with reporter @ronlieber, spending time with its live-in student residents (slide 6), a revolving door of sprightly student bakers, and capturing the spirit of this unique baking abode.

Many thanks to @ragtimebilliepeaches for inviting me to contribute the visuals to this story.

🎀✨💅 Girls Got Guns 💕💫💖

I photographed a gun safety training class this week hosted by Sex Workers Outreach Project Minneapolis (@swopmpls) for @mprnews.

Guided by instructors from Atlas Defense (@atlasdefensemn), participants learned to handle unloaded handguns in a “dry fire” classroom setting before heading to Stock & Barrel Gun Club in Eagan to practice the real thing.

———

With words and reporting by the great @samstroozas:

CN (pictured in the first slide) is afraid of guns. She’s never imagined herself with a weapon, but on this day she’s holding an unloaded gun as part of a ‘dry fire’ class at the Sex Workers Outreach Project office in Minneapolis, better known as SWOP. She and others in the class are learning how to hold and point a handgun.

She says she has felt more nervous after Renee Macklin Good and Alex Pretti were shot and killed by federal agents last month. Pretti was legally carrying a firearm, which led to conversations around second amendment rights during the surge.

CN’s story is similar to other Minnesotans with immigrant roots. CN asked MPR News not to use her full name out of fear for her safety. Her uncle is an immigrant and was recently detained by agents when they were looking for someone else. She worries her dad and grandma who don’t speak much English will be racially profiled.

She feels hopeless. This disempowerment has led her to consider learning gun safety.
“It’s scary, I don’t even know how to put it into words. I feel like I have to protect me and my family and everyone that I love,” she said. “I’ve never been interested in it before. I haven’t been to a range before, but I think knowing the safety behind it is really important. Especially if I come across handling a gun in any situation.” taken in Minneapolis, Minnesota by @liamjamesphoto

María Pabón Gautier has been sending her children to school with their passports.

Despite her having been raised in Puerto Rico, where native residents are U.S. citizens, María said she realized her family would “need to figure out how we move differently,” soon after President Trump began making disparaging comments about Somali immigrants in Minnesota.

Portrait of Joua Tsu Thao and his daughter, Kaying Thao, together at home here in Minnesota.

Mr. Thao, a 75-year old citizen, retired mental health practitioner and pastor who fought with U.S. forces during the Vietnam War, now tapes his passport and drivers license to the outside of his clothing when leaving the house. “We need to be ready before they point a gun to us,” he said.

The father and daughter belong to one of the first Hmong families to arrive in Minnesota, said Ms. Thao — previously a point of pride for their family, considering Minnesota now has one of the country’s largest Hmong populations. That pride has dissipated.

“Grief, Whistles and Bad Dreams: Minnesotans Describe 2 Months in an Immigration Crackdown”

Published online today for @nytimes with reporting by Julie Bosman (@juliecbosman), Lauren McCarthy (@laurenmccarth), Talya Minsberg (@tminsberg), and Sheila M. Eldred.

I photographed just a handful of the fellow Minnesotans who lent their voices to this story, as we all grapple with the ongoing, violent omnipresence of federal immigration enforcement that continues to reverberate into every part of daily life here.

1. Eric Swanlund, a nurse anesthetist who worked with Alex Pretti at the VA hospital, has been sick with anger, nauseated, and grinding his teeth since Pretti was shot and killed last Saturday. “I don’t think the people of Minnesota are going to forget what they’ve done.”

2. While chatting with a friend from California on the phone recently, Sue Morrison recalled them saying, “I hope the craziness of Minneapolis isn’t bothering you,” – The question almost shocked her. “And I said, ‘Yes, it’s bothering me,’” she said. “I live here. How can it not bother me?’ If you think it’s somehow isolated to some tiny little pocket, you are badly mistaken, because it’s everywhere.”

3. “All of a sudden, a thought will come to my head or I’ll see a headline, and I’ll tear up,” said Molly Phipps, a consultant and mother of two children in St. Paul. “Sometimes it’s just because regular people are doing amazing things. Or sometimes it’s because it’s so sad to walk into these once-thriving businesses and see them empty.”

I invite you to please engage in a few minutes of reflection today and read through this story – especially if you aren’t in Minnesota, or if maybe you’ve been struggling to feel connected to the daily reality and impact of what’s happening here.
