Discovering the Unique Port Jackson Shark! Did you know that the Port Jackson shark (Heterodontus portusjacksoni) gets its name from the beautiful coastal area in Australia where it’s often found? These fascinating sharks have distinct wavy markings and a flattened head, making them stand out in the underwater world. 🐾 They’re known for their leisurely pace and are often spotted exploring rocky reefs and kelp beds. From their specialized teeth for crushing shells to their intriguing egg-laying behavior, Port Jackson sharks are a true wonder of nature. The Southern Ocean runs on krill.

These tiny creatures provide food for whales, penguins, seals, seabirds and fish, supporting some of the most iconic wildlife on Earth.

Yet while Antarctic wildlife is increasingly under pressure from climate change and human activities, krill are being extracted at record levels to produce products such as omega-3 health supplements, aquaculture feed and pet food.

Every tonne removed from the ocean is a tonne unavailable to the animals that depend on it for survival. The future of Antarctica should not be traded for products we can live without. It’s time to put wildlife first.

Join our Antarctic Avengers and #DropKrillPills

Sign the pledge, and tell policymakers of leading krill fishing nations they should too.

🐧 Swap krill oil for algae omega-3
🐧 Check your pet food
🐧 Ask your supermarket about their farmed salmon
🐧 Add your voice at act.our-antarctica.com

I’m so honoured to have filmed Dr Silvia Earle for this incredibly important campaign at @kanaloa.ocean

Filmed by @hanliprinsloo - Tiger sharks of the Wild Coast and the Sardine Run are among the most elusive predators we encounter. In all the years I’ve been guiding here, sightings have been rare, but yesterday we were lucky enough to find one.

Over time, I’ve noticed a fascinating behaviour. Occasionally, tiger sharks patrol beneath Cape gannets resting on the surface and will ambush and eat them. I’ve witnessed this happen twice, and on other occasions we’ve found freshly severed gannet wings still floating, unmistakable evidence of a recent attack.

The birds often give the shark away before you ever see it. Instead of diving, the gannets gather tightly together, circling low over a single spot and staring intently into the water. It’s a curious, investigative flight pattern that I’ve learnt to recognise over the years. Yesterday, Hanli Prinsloo slipped into the water where I suspected a tiger shark might be, based entirely on the behaviour of the birds, and within moments she found it.

The same gathering behaviour can sometimes occur over other large animals or objects of interest, but when it’s accompanied by nervous, watchful birds and no feeding activity, it always makes me wonder if a tiger shark is below.

This magnificent shark, an apex predator of the warm Agulhas Current, was cruising less than a kilometre from the shoreline. Encounters like this are a reminder that the more time you spend quietly observing wildlife, the more you begin to understand the subtle clues animals give each other. The ocean is constantly communicating—if you’re patient enough to watch. by @liamswebb
