Can we protect threatened marine species and improve coastal livelihoods? 🦈💙

🤯 this is the main research question that has kept me up at night for the last ~10 years ➡️ swipe for answers from 14 pilot programs of marine conservation incentives across 9 coastal areas in #Indonesia implemented by a dream team of researchers and NGO partners.

(Spoiler: the answer is YES WE CAN but it requires open minds 🤝💭 and empirical hearts 💙📊)

Common misconception vs reality

Common misconception : vicious killer

Reality: 200 million year old apex predator that is perfectly adapted to its environment. Able to hunt cooperatively in groups.

Absolutely placid amongst divers

Common misconception: stupid, prehistoric

Reality: ancient yes but stupid no - they have successfully evaded their largest and most dangerous predators, orcas, for quite some time, cleverly using man made structures like harbour walls to avoid detection and find sanctuary.

Common misconception: they have weird mismatched teeth

Reality: their dentition is actually beautifully specialised. The lower teeth are broad and comb-like, while the uppers are jagged. The lower jaw helps anchor large prey while the upper teeth cut as the shark moves its head

Common misconception: ugly and unevolved

Reality: boopy snoots

Morning swim? The penguins had the same idea. 🐧

I set my alarm for sunrise ☀️, slipped into the water before the rest of the world woke up and somehow found myself bumping into penguins on their morning commute.

African penguins are endemic to the southern African coastline (found nowhere else on earth). And as adorable as they are on land, underwater they are a completely different animal 👀. Fast, agile and wildly curious.

They will swim right up to your mask and stare at you like YOU are the strange one for being in their ocean.

Which, to be fair, we are.

What most people don’t know is that African penguins are endangered 🩵. Their population has declined by over 70% in the last few decades due to overfishing, oil spills, habitat loss and climate change affecting the availability of their prey 🐟.

So every encounter like this one feels like a gift. And a reminder to protect these weird little birds. 🐧

Have you ever seen a penguin swim? 👇🏽

Who should pay to save sharks and rays? 🦈

For many small-scale fishers, a threatened shark in the net puts food on the table or pays for their kid’s school uniform. Letting it go isn’t a moral choice — it’s a financial one. And we typically expect these households to accept those costs in the name of marine conservation, then wonder why conservation isn’t working... But what if there was a different way?

Over the last three years, we - a group of researchers and local NGOs in Indonesia - designed & tested ✨positive conservation incentives✨ across 9 fishing communities with >600 households.

More than 3,000 sharks and rays released alive, and catches of thousand more averted entirely. Reductions in retained catches of Critically Endangered species of 25–95% across the portfolio of projects. And every fisher involved reporting the same or better wellbeing than before, despite reductions in valuable catches, thanks to replacement income sources or conservation-linked cash transfers.

Sardine Run 2026… WHAT A WEEK! 🤯 (Sound up!)

Seven days deep in the wilds with Steve and the @animal_ocean crew… Freediving alongside whales, weaving through pods of dolphins, sardines balling up beneath us in an impossible silver storm, tiger dusky and black tip sharks cruising the coastline, electric rays cuddling in the sand, gannets falling from the sky, albatross swooping overhead… and then the whale song. That sound in your chest, your heart… your soul.

Up top the Wild Coast did its own kind of magic… rolling green hills tumbling down to the sea, cows grazing right along the cliffs, rondavels dotting the landscape, that slow rhythm of rural life reminding us of who we can be.

Shared with the best kind of people a group of @oceantraveltrips clients who showed up ready for anything, laughing between dives, buzzing on the boat, all of us in awe every single day.

Grateful doesn’t even cover it. Already dreaming about next year. 🐬🦈🐋🐄
