We co-create culturally relevant books for young readers in communities worldwide
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Meet Evans, a bright and bubbly seven-year-old from Vanuatu who is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. 💛

The pure joy Evans finds in reading shines through in this video, reflecting the kind of experience we strive to provide for every child who reads a Library For All book. Because books aren’t just about learning and literacy, they’re also about wonder, adventure and fun!

Children need books they can see themselves in – for Library For All, this means providing locally authored, culturally relevant books that reflect local history, culture and daily life.

To help spread joy through reading while boosting literacy outcomes for Vanuatu’s youngest children, Library for All developed 59 new stories, all by Ni-Vanuatu writers and written to reflect real life in Vanuatu. 🌺

Thank you to the Ministry of Education & Training, Vanuatu, Save the Children Vanuatu, @churchofjesuschrist, gpforeducation and @savechildrenaus for their support. by @libraryforall

Did you know that 70% of children in low- and middle-income countries can’t read proficiently by age 10? This is a learning crisis with lifelong consequences.

Library For All is a global initiative of Save the Children Australia. The Library For All team works alongside partners and communities to expand access to quality education and improve children’s literacy outcomes by creating culturally relevant books that reflect local cultures and contexts.

Our books are designed to support meaningful and joyful reading experiences in schools, at home and in community – and we work with local systems, including schools and governments, to embed reading in everyday life to create sustainable reading cultures. By working in partnership and looking to shift outcomes long term, we can boost children’s literacy and change lives.

From remote communities in Papua New Guinea to conflict-impacted areas in Ukraine, Library For All is supporting more than 560,000 children on their learning journey. by @libraryforall

It's World Mental Health Day today and the theme ‘Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change' instantly made us think of Jayson, a brave and softly spoken teenager from Vanuatu, who knows firsthand what it feels like to be caught up in a massive 7.3 magnitude earthquake.

Courageously, Jayson relived his experience with us, recalling he was so scared he lost consciousness. He also feared, upon waking, that he'd lost his mother. Thankfully, Jayson and all his family were unscathed apart from minor injuries and Jayson is now happily back at school with his friends – and beloved books. 📗

In the aftermath of the earthquake, Library For All – with support from Ministry of Education & Training, Vanuatu and @savethechildren_int – made sure Jayson and other children from his community didn't miss out on their education and had access to therapeutic storytelling – a powerful tool for supporting trauma recovery and wellbeing. 🫶🏽

We did this by providing a range of high-quality books including two titles, Safe Again and That Day, which were written by clinical psychologist Agnieszka Kochanowicz to support Ni-Vanuatu children impacted by the disaster. ❤️‍🩹

“We were given two books and I love them both. I learned the people in the story shared their feelings about the earthquake with their families and friends, not hiding anything. I love reading because it helps me learn about new things,” shares Jayson.

Storytelling sits at the very heart of First Nations culture and has done for over 65,000 years. 🔥🖤 📙

First Nations’ stories play an integral role in knowledge sharing, exploring and preserving cultural identity, and educating one generation to the next. And when stories truly reflect the life of the person reading it – they have the power to change lives, especially for our young readers. 🫶🏾

Library For All’s Our Yarning 420+ book collection proudly embeds First Nations perspectives and aims to highlight the incredible strengths, stories, and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children across the country. 🖤💛❤️

Enjoy this 🎥 of First Nations children sharing some of their favourite Our Yarning books. And check out Our Yarning’s collection here: ouryarning.org

Happy Manit Day to the people of Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) 🎉

Manit Day is part of RMI’s Lutok Kobban Alele festival, which is all about promoting, preserving, and celebrating Marshallese language, legends, customs (manit), and history. 🇲🇭

Various festivities include traditional singing, dancing, parades, canoe races, basket weaving and coconut husking competitions. Local school children also perform customary dances, skits, songs, and stories. 🥥🎶📙

Stories are an integral part of preserving and honouring local culture and RMI is steeped in rich history and tradition. Library For All is proudly supporting the RMI Public School System to co-create and distribute culturally relevant books to Marshallese children – supporting the country in its aim to boost literacy and development outcomes for younger generations. 🌱

We are thrilled to announce that a brand-new collection of 16,000 books for young children will soon be on its way to RMI. The books, which are published in both Marshallese and English, centre on 10 age-appropriate stories co-created by Library For All and Marshallese educators. The whole collection draws on local knowledge and experiences, creating stories young children and families can truly connect with. 📚

Watch this space for future updates about our precious cargo arriving on RMI's shores! 🛳️

Thank you to RMI Public School System and The World Bank Group for their support with this collection. by @libraryforall

It likely comes as no surprise whatsoever that our team at Library For All are a bunch of book lovers 🤓

Laura Cheek, our brilliant Operations Coordinator, has been with Library For All for nearly five years, so she knows our book collections inside out! 📚

Although she found it incredibly tough to whittle it down to just one title, when asked which of our books is her all-time favourite she landed on The Sun Went Fishing by Oksana Radushynska from our Ukraine collection. ☀️🎣

“This is my longest-standing favourite book. The Sun comes down and tries to go fishing, not for food but for friends. But the Stormcloud comes to start a fight, and the Sun learns the true way to make friends with the fish. The illustrations are some of the best things I’ve worked on, the style is whimsical and unique, and I learned a surprising amount about Ukrainian culture. The Sun’s hat is a traditional summer hat in Ukraine, for example. I’ve never stopped loving this story.”

Stories that reflect children’s worlds. That’s what Library For All strives to deliver – books that children can really see themselves in. 📚

We do this by ensuring our collections are a mix of “mirror” and “windows” books that provide opportunities for both recognition and discovery.💡

This approach prioritises stories that reflect readers’ own cultures and languages, while also introducing perspectives from other communities and contexts. 🌏

Here, Tanya Orlyk, a passionate reading advocate from Ukraine, sums up this curatorial approach beautifully 🎥 by @libraryforall

Happy International Literacy Day! 📚

This year's @unesco's theme ‘Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity' provides the perfect opportunity to shine a light on why literacy is so vital for children across the world. 🌏

This year, International Literacy Day marks its 60th anniversary 🎉The day's key message has never waivered: literacy is a fundamental human right for all.

Library For All's work is all about sustaining this human right for children globally. We do this by putting books into children's hands – and not just any books. We strive to deliver high-quality books that are relevant to children's unique cultures, languages, lives and learning needs. Because when children see themselves in the books they read, their learning and engagement outcomes are significantly boosted. They also feel as if they belong in the world of books, and that the world of books belongs to them. 💛

To celebrate this year's International Literacy Day, Library for All and @savechildrenaus held reading events with children in Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu. 🌺

“I had the privilege of spending time with children in the Children's Ward at Vila Central Hospital in Vanuatu, sharing stories, laughter and a few special moments together. Watching children become immersed in a story is a powerful reminder of just how much reading can inspire imagination, build confidence and create hope for the future. Every child deserves the chance to experience the joy of reading and the opportunities that come with it,” says Kim Koch, Pacific Regional Director, Save the Children.

As well as acknowledging such an important day, we want to highlight the importance of literacy in homes, schools and communities globally, and the critical role books play in creating a more peaceful and equal world. 🫶🏽

Meet our wonderful Head of Publishing, Dr Lara Cain Gray ⭐

For nearly nine years, Lara has brought her love of storytelling and expert skills as "a proud librarian and picture book activist" to Library For All — delivering cross-cultural, multilingual books to communities that have limited access to high-quality, culturally relevant books. 📚🌏

Lara brings a rare mix of skills: qualified librarianship, research in cross-cultural studies and translation, and many years' experience curating multilingual collections in both Australia and the UK.

“There is a global literacy crisis right now. So, I’m very proud to work with an organisation that co-creates book collections based on the needs of communities with a view to fostering a robust reading culture,” says Lara.

Her favourite Library For All book? Coffee House from our Ukraine collection — a heart-warming story about comfort and connection in everyday moments, made all the more powerful for children whose lives continue to be disrupted by ongoing conflict.

Thank you, Lara for the passion and expertise you bring to Library For All! 💛

📚🐴 Meet Killion, Harris, Ezkiel and Caspar – four young men who rode on horseback through some of Vanuatu's most remote country to get new Ni-Vanuatu-authored children's books into the hands of kids who'd been waiting for them.

This is what youth-led change looks like. On #InternationalYouthDay, we're celebrating young people everywhere who show up, step up, and help make literacy possible.
