POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Did you know that 70% of children in low- and middle-income countries can’t read proficiently by age 10? This is a learning crisis with lifelong consequences.

Library For All is a global initiative of Save the Children Australia. The Library For All team works alongside partners and communities to expand access to quality education and improve children’s literacy outcomes by creating culturally relevant books that reflect local cultures and contexts.

Our books are designed to support meaningful and joyful reading experiences in schools, at home and in community – and we work with local systems, including schools and governments, to embed reading in everyday life to create sustainable reading cultures. By working in partnership and looking to shift outcomes long term, we can boost children’s literacy and change lives.

From remote communities in Papua New Guinea to conflict-impacted areas in Ukraine, Library For All is supporting more than 560,000 children on their learning journey.

The art —> The inspiration 🕊️

Library for All’s ‘Our Yarning’ mission is to address the disproportionate impact of low education attainment among Aboriginal children and young people by providing access to stories that are culturally relevant, and written by mob for mob. ‘Nell and Dom’ is my contribution 🩵 It is a representation of grief, loss, coping, and inner voice through the lens of a child. If you couldn’t tell by the fairly un-subtle naming, the little girl in the pink shirt is me. But who is Dom?

If you know me, you probably have heard about two things a few times before:
1. About how it’s always been a dream of mine to write a kids book
2. About Dave
I feel so grateful that Dave is a part of this with me, and that together through this story, we might be able to help at least one child in some way. Whether that’s a child experiencing grief and loss, a child learning to love reading, or a child seeing themselves in a book character.

If you want to grab a physical copy of Nell and Dom, with all proceeds going to Our Yarning, you can do so here: https://ouryarning.org/products/nell-and-dom?_pos=1&_psq=nell&_psid=700ec8521&_ss=e
Otherwise, they also have a FREE app with all the current Our Yarning texts available!

Most of what I do in this life, I do hoping my friend Dave would be proud of me for it. I think he’d be happy with this one 🩵
Thank you for reading and supporting.
Love, Nell (and Dom)

I’m so sad today to discover that the proposal to discontinue the role of teacher librarian in the Newcastle-Maitland Diocese has been ratified.

All done to improve education outcomes.

I feel so sad for the students who won’t have a teacher librarian to find that book that will change their lives, make them a lifelong reader, inspire them to be curious, offer them hope, make them feel seen. A library without a librarian is like a ship without a rudder. It simply drifts instead of sets sails for great adventures. I’m so sad for the literacy levels in the area, which across Australia are already very low.

My library saved my life, made me a reader, offered me a haven, set me up for the life of an author that I’m so privileged to now be enjoying.

We wont give up fighting for the right of every kid in Australia to have access to a library and teacher librarian, not just the lucky few. Every kid.

Please consider signing our petition if you haven’t yet and sharing it far and wide…we have over 20000 signatures so far and rising.

That’s a wrap! What a wondrous term 3!! Visiting schools all over the country and getting kids excited about books, reading and writing their own stories.

There’s nothing like seeing kids wide eyed and leaning in, desperate to know what happens next, reading aloud and leaving them on a cliffhanger, asking for volunteers to be story helpers in creating a story on the run and explaining that all good authors have the skill of being able to make trouble. So that’s what we did…made trouble and created spectacular stories.

Most importantly, we had fun! I want every author talk to leave kids smiling, to make them want to borrow a book and even be authors themselves.

All this was only possible because of the MAGNIFICENT teacher librarians I met. Every one a legend!! But they are endangered! Slowly being removed from schools so fewer and fewer kids have access to a qualified librarian to help them find that book that will make them lifelong readers, that will inspire and excite them, that will make them laugh, cry and create empathy.

We’ve started a petition asking all governments to mandate teacher librarians in all schools. In an age of plummeting literacy and increased levels of anxiety, we need teacher librarians to teach kids research skills, critical thinking, literacy skills and to find that book they’ll love, boosting their levels of happiness and wellbeing.

September 8 is International Literacy Day. Increased literacy creates more literate, just, peaceful and sustainable societies. A big shout out to non-profits like Library For All who work towards this every day. And thank you to those translators who have helped my work reach international audiences. #internationalliteracyday #libraryforall #mercierpress

You may have heard that last week. The Catholic Schools diocese of Newcastle – Maitland plan to discontinue the role of teacher librarians in 2027.

This is not the only area where teacher librarians are disappearing. Their role has been devalued and minimised even though the evidence and the research shouts from the rooftops that having a library and a librarian as the heart of your school encourages a culture of reading, curiosity, learning, and increases the levels of well-being across the school community.

It is a false economy to discontinue the role of the teacher librarian in any school when the aim of that school is to encourage a love of learning, resilience, and to forster a sense of joy and well-being.

If you feel strongly about this please consider signing the petition that is asking all governments across Australia mandate teacher librarians in Australian school schools.

My third reader for @savechildrenaus literacy initiative, @libraryforall, is now published 🥰.

Pretty cool to be able to search my name in places like Amazon and Barnes and Noble and see these readers I’ve illustrated all come up together 🥰

This latest one is about young Harlo who is leaving for boarding school. It’s her first time on a plane, and she’s pretty scared. Her mum knows just how to help.
